Broken Meat
Pola Rapaport
(1991 - 59 min)

«گوشت پاره پاره شده» یک پرتره بسیار جذاب از آلن گرنویل - یک شاعر، فردی با اختلال مصرف مواد، و مهم تر از همه، نیویورکی.

این مستند، رویکردی هنری و به نوبه خود سرگرم کننده، صریح و مأیوس کننده (هرچند هرگز احساساتی)، برای نشان دادن درون و بیرونِ این شاعر کم و بیش بی‌ خانمان را
در خود مستتر دارد.

New York is so full of artists, you could say that just by crossing a certain age threshold, one passes into contention for being the patron saint of starving artists - along with a legion of mostly anonymous, sadly talented people who, like the enshrined Van Gogh in the film, will die before their reputations begin - if they ever do. Maybe his will - it's early, yet. He doesn't even have a Wikipedia page.

Broken Meat
Pola Rapaport
(1991 - 59 min - Eng Audio)

Alan Granville is often compared to the writers William S. Burroughs and Charles Bukowski. Like them, Granville lives on the fringes of society: he is addicted to drugs, homeless, destitute, and schizophrenic. Rapaport draws a portrait of Granville in a sober and rough film.

Soundtrack, with Granville's poetry, in combination with images of, unknown districts of New York, creates an atmosphere that reminds us of the fifties. The third-rate hotels, the seedy streets... New York seems to be heading straight for its ruin.

Prizes:
Award of the Press - Message to Man Leningrad Film Festival - Ivens Prize Nominee, IDFA - Best Cinematography, Oberhausen - Best Documentary, New Orleans Film Festival - Special Mention, Hawaii Film Festival

Wonderful!
Kurt Vonnegut

Funky, excellent, neo-beatnik...
A must see, especially for poets

Susan Sontag, The Art of Fiction No. 143

Susan Sontag lives in a sparsely furnished five-room apartment on the top floor of a building in Chelsea on the west side of Manhattan. Books - as many as fifteen thousand- and papers are everywhere.

A lifetime could be spent browsing through the books on art and architecture, theater and dance, philosophy and psychiatry, the history of medicine, and the history of religion, photography, and opera and so on.

The various European literatures - French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, etcetera, as well as hundreds of books of Japanese literature and books on Japan - are arranged by language in a loosely chronological way.

So is American literature as well as English literature, which runs from Beowulf to, say, James Fenton. Sontag is an inveterate clipper, and the books are filled with scraps of paper (“Each book is marked and filleted,” she says), the bookcases festooned with notes scrawled with the names of additional things to read.
