❗🇺🇲 The Senate Appropriations Committee will mark up bills that include $21 billion in emergency defense spending and $13.5 billion in emergency non-defense spending above the caps set by the FRA. The Senate Armed Services Committed had authorized a $25 billion increase (Ranking Member @SenatorWicker wanted +$55 billion). Emergency spending is not subject to the FRA caps, so these increases do not trigger any of the penalties in the legislation.
The House stuck with the top lines established by the caps, so this will still have to be negotiated further, but I'm cautiously optimistic that there will end up being a badly needed increase to the defense budget.
The US Air Force in particular does not have enough money to fund all of their critical recapitalization programs.

The United States, Germany and Romania will donate a PATRIOT each. The Netherlands (reportedly in conjunction with Sweden) will deliver a fourth, and Italy will donate another SAMP/T.
Beyond these 5 systems, Ukrainian officials said they expect 4 more by year's end.

@John_A_Ridge: The Spanish FU is reportedly part of the additional 4 batteries that the Ukrainians will receive. Though they also included Sweden's contribution in this group and we have to assume they are providing the other components for the Dutch FU in this first group.

@John_A_Ridge @deaidua @S1epanS: All the reporting suggests that these 5 are new commitments beyond what has already been pledged, but time will tell. The media certainly gets a lot of details wrong.

🇺🇲🇨🇦 Senator Sullivan represents Alaska and is acutely aware of the strategic importance of the northwest passage. If Canada isn't going to take national defence seriously then we won't have any control over our own sovereign territory. Best case scenario in that situation is that the United States takes over. Worse case scenario, Russia & China do.
