Rolling Stone Magazine

Christian Schwartz remembers how elated he was to see one of his typefaces used on the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time. It was in 1998, during the illustrious Fred Woodward–Gail Anderson era; Robusto and Bold cuts of Fritz, an homage to Oz Cooper, were used to set coverlines over a full-bleed image of Katie Holmes. So when Richard Turley of Food and Mark Leeds of c-ll-ct-v-ly called on Commercial Type earlier this year to rethink the magazine’s type palette for the redesign they were working on, Christian didn’t hesitate to say yes.

The graphic type suite comprises a full A-Z uppercase alphabet, with 0-9 numerals. Its design is intended to blend the digital space Domaine occupies with the flexibility of their approach.

KGNU by order

KGNU (1390 AM & 88.5 FM) is a radio station serving the greater Denver and Boulder areas in Colorado.

LL Supreme Bold and Light, by Lineto→, are used for legibility and clarity in the brand.
Their construction mirrors the geometry of LL Cobra VIP.
LL Cobra VIP, also by Lineto→, is used as the primary identification of the logo, and as a graphic support to the extended brand language.

Vietnam Festival of Media & Design: Hanoi 2019

The highlight of the visual expression is its bespoke typeface and design system. Ba Đình, a bold geometric sans serif, is a juxtaposition of Hanoi’s culture and media/design contexts. We came up with a system that not only translates the idea of Hanoi as a multi-layered cultural city, but also realizes the potential of having multiple variations.
