Pitch of Roof Truss

👉 It is the Ratio of Rise and Span is called Pitch.

👉 Pitch = Rise/Span.

👉 Normally the value of Pitch is kept 1/3 to 1/5.

👉 Lower pitches are more advantageous because the effect of wind pressure on the roof truss gets reduced.

Splicing in Tension Member

If a single piece of a tension member is not available for the required length then tension members are spliced to transfer the required tension from one piece to another.

The strength of the splice plates and bolts/welded connections must have strength at least equal to the design load.

In case, connecting tension members are of different thickness, then filler plates are used.

As per IS 800:2007, the design shear strength of bolts carrying shear through a packing plate of thickness in excess of 6 mm shall be reduced by a factor given by,

βpkg = 1 - 0.0125 tpkg

tpkg = Thickness of thicker packing plate (in mm)

Different Types of Buckling

Bonus : Local Buckling occurs when a part of compression member shows lateral deformation instead of complete member.

1. The first moment of inertia :

The first moment of area, sometimes misnamed as the first moment of inertia.

It is to the moment of area equals the summation of area times distance to an axis [Σ(a x d)].

2. Second moment of Inertia :

It means the distance to each element of area or mass is raised to the second power.

Σ r * dA = first moment of area
Σ r * dm = first moment of mass
Σ r2 * dA = second moment of area
Σ r2 * dm = second moment of mass = moment of inertia

3. Section modulus :

It is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members.

The elastic section modulus is defined as S = I/y.

4. Polar modulus :

It is defined as the ratio of the polar moment of inertia to the radius of the shaft.

It is also called as torsional section modulus. It is denoted by Zp.

5. Shape factor :

It is defined as the ratio of the plastic moment and the yield moment of the section.

It is a function of the cross-section form or shape
