What does the word âdefenestrationâ make you think of?
I was talking with a friend when I mentioned the word and he said that it sounded like it meant something sexual. I disagreed, but when I asked...
reddit conventional "wisdom" on asexuality
On other subs, when a thread OP/submitter suggests they may be asexual, these are the kinds of replies they usually get. It's a rare thread that doesn't go this way.
The reddit conventional "wisdom" is that 1) asexuality doesn't exist, 2) your condition is due to trauma or mental illness or internalized misogyny/misandry, 3) you should find a psychologist who can diagnose and treat you, 4) if a psychologist doesn't identify any trauma or mental illness, you need to keep trying different psychologists until one does, no matter the cost--it's not as if redditors will foot the bill.
Also 5) you're a lesbian even though you're not sexually attracted to women / gay even though you're not attracted to men.
6) don't give up!!! Because considering an asexual-spectrum orientation is considered "giving up" according to reddit.
Bonus: 7) you're repressed due to a religious background (because all religions are sexually repressive according to reddit). 8) "It's okay to be a sexual being! You just need to open up!"
9) "I used to think I was asexual, too, but anti-depressants cured my asexuality" but also 10) "My anti-depressants kill my sex drive and make me asexual". I've even seen one discussion a few years ago in which someone who had never been diagnosed with depression, and who wasn't prescribed anti-depressants, was told to buy anti-depressants from friends to see if it would fix their asexuality.
I've seen discussions that didn't go this way, but they're rare.

Just went on a date with allo and I'm shocked.
He watched YouTube videos on asexuality before seeing me, to better understand what I am! Not only that, he asked questions and compared his experiences to mine, and he wasn't condescending!! I didn't hear any of the usual "maybe you haven't met the right guy" crap.
To some it might seem like nothing, but it was so refreshing to experience that. What a decent lad

My partner and I just announced our engagement this weekend! 16 years together, both somewhere on the Ace spectrum, and it just made sense. I made cookies to celebrate. :D
