In #Pakistan, during clashes in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, security forces eliminated ten militants of the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan. The first incident occurred in the North Waziristan district, where, after receiving information about the whereabouts of the terrorists, the military launched a search operation. Having found the militants, the security forces started a shootout, in which six criminals were neutralized. The second skirmish took place near the border with Afghanistan, through which the terrorists entered Pakistan. During the shootout, four terrorists were eliminated. At the site of the clashes, the military seized weapons and equipment of the militants.

According to intelligence agencies, the liquidated are involved in terrorist attacks against government forces and civilians in the region.
The presidents of #Chad and #Niger pledged Wednesday to revive the G5 Sahel military grouping to boost the fight against jihadist insurgents after Mali quit the West African force.

But Niger’s Mohamed Bazoum who held talks in N’Djamena with junta leader Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, skirted round a question on the redeployment of French troops.

After nine years battling jihadists in Mali, France is pulling its troops out and reducing its presence in the wider Sahel following a falling out with the Bamako junta.

“The decision to withdraw from Mali is an episode that will be behind us,” Bazoum told a press conference.

“Soon there will be a meeting” of the remaining four G5 allies — Burkina Faso, Chad, Mauritania, and Niger — “to make sure the G5 is viable,” he added.

Mali’s junta announced in May it was leaving the G5 alliance which was set up in 2014 and has worked alongside the French Barkhane force against multiple jihadist factions who are nonetheless advancing southwards.

More than 2,000 civilians have been killed in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso since the start of the year.

“We don’t consider that it’s over for the G5 Sahel, we are going to fight,” Bazoum insisted.

General Deby, who took power when his father died more than a year ago on the frontlines after ruling for three decades, said he “regretted” Mali’s departure from the G5.

“Let’s stay optimistic and hope it comes back on the decision,” he said.

France announced the Barkhane withdrawal in February after deploying as many as 5,000 troops in Mali. Only 2,500 French soldiers will remain in the Sahel.

Paris is set to maintain more than 1,000 troops in Niger, backed by three fighter planes, six armed drones, and up to six helicopters as its role changes to supporting rather than replacing local forces.

Bazoum said Niamey was still in talks with partners about the French redeployment.

The two presidents said they had signed a security agreement on Wednesday but gave no further details.

They also made no mention of how their own army deployments would be adjusted to take into account France’s troop reductions.

The reduced French operation that takes over from Barkhane will for now remain based in N’Djamena.

Suspected rebels have killed at least nine people in twin attacks in eastern Democratic Republic of #Congo, officials said Wednesday, in the latest violence to hit the turbulent region.

Fighters from the feared Armed Democratic Forces (ADF) group killed six civilians in an attack on the town of Beni in North Kivu province on Tuesday night, according to local civil-society leader Pepin Paluku Kavota.

He told reporters on Wednesday the militants targeted a district just a kilometer from army headquarters in the city of 400,000.

The dead included a 15-year-old boy and a 90-year-old woman, said Kavota, who urged security forces “to redouble their efforts.”

The same night, militants also killed at least three people in an attack on a village in neighboring Ituri province.

“This is a provisional number,” local civil-society figure Gaston Kandole told AFP.

The village also lies near a Congolese military base.

The ADF — which the Islamic State group claims as its Central African offshoot — is active in both North Kivu and Ituri.

The group is among the most violent of the more than 120 militias that roam eastern Congo, and has been accused of massacring Congolese civilians and carrying out terrorist attacks in neighboring Uganda. https://www.thedefensepost.com/2022/07/14/rebels-kill-dr-congo/

#Israel is one of the world’s worst violators of children’s rights, according to António Guterres.

But the UN secretary-general has once again left Israel off an annual list naming the world’s worst abusers. By doing so he’s sending a clear message to Tel Aviv that it can continue killing Palestinian children with impunity.

This isn’t the first time the UN chief has singled Israel out for special treatment. But it once again highlights the complicity of international bodies in crimes that they are supposed to work to prevent.

Guterres “reported that Israeli security forces killed 78 Palestinian children and injured 982 in 2021, more casualties [than] caused by any other armed force or group in the 21 conflict countries covered in his review,” Human Rights Watch observed Tuesday.

“Despite this, Guterres failed to include Israeli forces in his annual ‘list of shame’ for violations against children in armed conflict,” the group added.

“For years, Guterres has employed a double standard by listing some parties on his ‘list of shame’ while omitting others that have often committed far more violations,” Human Rights Watch said.

“Israel has never appeared on the list, even though the UN has found its forces responsible for killing or injuring more than 7,000 Palestinian children since 2015.”

In his 2022 report to the Security Council on children and armed conflict, Guterres states that “the highest numbers of grave violations were verified in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory, Somalia, the Syrian Arab Republic and Yemen.”

State and non-state actors in each and every one of those countries, along with many others, are on Guterres’ list, but none from Israel.

The 15 countries from which state and non-state actors are named in the “list of shame” are all in the global south, eight of them in Africa.

In Yemen, Guterres lists only the Houthi rebel movement, once again omitting Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and their American and European allies, whose devastating seven-year war on that country has caused the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with particularly severe harm to children.

Similarly, in Afghanistan, the UN omits mention of US and allied forces, whose invasion and 20-year occupation of the country cost the lives of tens of thousands of children.

Even as American occupation forces withdrew chaotically from Afghanistan last summer, leaving behind a devastated country on the brink of famine, the US carried out a drone strike that killed seven children. https://electronicintifada.net/blogs/ali-abunimah/un-chief-greenlights-israels-killing-palestinian-kids
