#بهجت_عباس ترجمة الدكتور بهجت عباسEnglishVarus The SecondBy Ali Mahmoud Taha (1902-1949)Translated from Arabic by Dr. Bahjat AbbasA report in a moment´-or-two Wandered in the world and shook the west and the east.If it were a whisper of lips a year ago,It were said, it would be a lie´-or-a speculation.A nation sees it on the two banks,That it was an Al-Elamain’s embryo.Mussolini! Where are you now? Where?A dream? A story?´-or-in between?**Venice Castle sends you todayThe curse of the balcony from near and far.Amazing! You challenger! How they treated you as a faller?Your less emperor is in misery,In vain he cries in the nightOh Varus! Where did you go with my soldiers?Where did you go with my monarch and with my glory?**Did you give up the power´-or-was it an escape? After you found the devastation around. You sent the boys to the battle, After the elderly perished in the war. O how they were bewildered in the death’s turmoil, Went fallen, hurt and captured. From running they fill the space with dust, And they filled the deserts with graves.** O’ Inventor of the shirts! in quantities and singles,Did your black shirts protect your homeland? Why did you prefer the black colour? This colour was mourning for the people. You came as a repeated spectacle with the costumesWhich people got prestige with the costumes and had dominated? It s the soul embers and flame,Not pretense, but sureness and belief.**Mussolini! Stand at the doors of Rome, Look deeply at it as ruins and foot--print--s.Stand and remember how yesterday they were stars. And picture them today as meteoritesthat ignited the border around youFollowing your rude unjust devil. Was this Rome´-or-a destroyed cityThe day it got hell from your sins?---------------------------- Publius Quinctilius Varus (49 AC) was a senator and general of Augustan times. His name is primarily associated with the Roman defeat in the Varus Battle named after him, in which three Roman legions perished under his leadership when they were attacked by Germans under the Cheruscan prince Arminius.
