Two days ago, Professor Hassen Mohammed, who hails from the Somali region, gave an interview to Kush Media, an Oromo news media. I listened to what the professor had to say on a number of issues, and here is my takeaway.
First of all, it is clear that the professor has an axe to grind when it comes to the TPLF, which he accuses of being a minority party that assembled satellite organizations from every nation and ruled Ethiopia for 27 years with an iron fist. He also claims that the federal system that was in place during the TPLF’s rule was fake and intended to divide and rule. Further, he is of the view that the TPLF was in the service of the interests of the United States and never cared about the country. (By the way, he makes the same accusations regarding the Prosperity Party). Obviously, he is entitled to his opinion, and I am not here to defend the TPLF, which, by its own admission, does not dispute that it made many strategic miscalculations. Even then, I also believe that the professor is not entitled to his own facts.
During the interview, I noticed that the professor, wittingly or unwittingly, made a couple of serious misrepresentations of facts about how Eritrea got involved in the Tigray war and whether Eritrea still occupies Irob land (and even if there are people who are called "Irob."
According to the professor, Eritrea joined the war on Tigray after the latter launched missiles to Asmara. Therefore, Eritrea presumably joined the war in self-defense. This is factually erroneous and patently a lie. Abiy and Issayas (and the Amhara Fanos and Special Forces) had been plotting to attack Tigray long before the missiles were launched. I refer readers to the extensive report in the New York Times regarding the genesis of the Tigray war. Read also the book by the then-head of security of the Amhara region (now deceased), who wrote that preparations to attack Tigray started long before the launching of the missiles. Other independent sources have also reported that troops were amassed in all directions to attack Tigray. In short, Eritrea would have joined the war on Abiy's side regardless of the missile attacks because the decision to invade Tigray was planned and agreed to well in advance.
The other lie is the professor's assertion that Eritrea has not occupied Ethiopian territory, particularly in reference to the area called "Irob" - located in east Tigray. Well, this is completely untrue. Just this past week, the United Nations issued a report on the human rights violations in Ethiopia that included human rights abuses in Irob's more than 50 villages by Eritrea that continues to occupy the land and called for its withdrawal. That is also the official position of the US and the EU, which have repeatey called for the withdrawal of Eritrean forces from Irob. Most of all, nobody denies that some of the Irob people have fled their homes and now live in shelters in Adigrat. So, it is beyond me where the hell the professor got his "facts."
Finally, I was dumbfounded when I heard what the professor said regarding the Irob people and their history. By the way, this issue is very personal for me. (During my younger years, I was a member of the EPRP based in Irob land, where I stayed for over two years). While I was there, I have learned a lot about the Irob people, their history, and culture. It is true that the Irob people belong to the Saho ethnicity and speak the same language. However, the Irob people are a distinct clan, mostly Catholic unlike their brethren in Eritrea who are Muslims. The Irob people identify themselves as Ethiopians. It is also worth noting that Irob land had never been part of Eritrea during the Italian colonial rule or after Eritrea was federated with Ethiopia - and even after Haile Selassie annexed Eritrea and made it a province. Irob land has always been under Tigray administration. These are the facts!! The professor was therefore telling fiction. He even had the audacity to disparage the proud people of Irob that the name "Irob" itself was a TPLF creation.

I personally know that the Irob people have been calling themselves Irob for hundreds of years.
Professor, your beef with the TPLF does not give you the right to create facts right out of your pockets.

Ethiopia, not just its officials, Stands accused of Genocide
=================
When Abiy weaponised the House of Federation (HOF) to stop all legal relationships with Tigray in 2020, in effect, it moved to eject and expel Tigray from the Federation. This is why we have been saying that the primary legal tie between Tigray and Ethiopia now is the Pretoria Ceasefire Agreement which invokes the constitution secondarily, and that only in regard to the implementation of the terms of the ceasefire.
Ever since the regime’s fateful act of ejecting Tigray from the Ethiopian Federation, the constitutional tie was broken. As far as Tigray was concerned, the constitution was rendered inoperative. Whether the Pretoria Agreement’s vague invocation of the constitution has a restorative significance is unclear, and is yet to be debated among lawyers.
Nevertheless, the fact that the regime ejected one of its regions from the federation at will as a prelude to its genocidal war will be remembered as a historical first in the empire’s constitutional-legal narrative.
And this formal act of isolating Tigray is one evidence showing how the genocidal campaign was a premeditated, systematic, and coordinated project of the Ethiopian government. This is where it formally began.
This is why the Ethiopian State as such stands accused for the crime of genocide. For this makes for a comprehensive indictment of Ethiopia before ICJ.

From Nobel peace prize to civil war: how Ethiopia’s leader beguiled the world
The long read: When Abiy Ahmed took power in Ethiopia, he was feted at home and abroad as a great unifier and reformer. Two years later, terrible violence was raging. How did people get him so wrong?
