โโ๐ The Internet's History
The #Internet's history goes back some decades by now โ #Email has been around since the 1960s, file sharing since at least the 1970s, and TCP/IP was standardized in 1982. But it was the creation of the world wide web (www) in 1989 that revolutionised our history of communication. The inventor of the world wide web was the English scientist Tim Berners-Lee who created a system to share information through a network of computers. At the time he was working for the European physics laboratory CERN in the Swiss Alps.
The chart below shows the share and number of people that are using the Internet, which in these statistics refers to all those who have used the Internet in the last 3 months.

โโ๐ Facebook Portal
#Facebook just unveiled Portal, a home video chat camera with auto-zoom & built-in #Amazon Alexa - for the people who still trust Facebook!
With #FacebookPortal, you canโt watch #YouTube; thereโs no web browser; #WhatsApp and #Instagram are nowhere to be found; and you canโt send or receive normal Facebook messages, even if theyโre video recordings. If you buy the Portal, you have to really want to video chat with other people on Facebook, and do so from one room in your home, on something other than the phone or laptop or tablet that you likely already have. (TheVerge)
With all the privacy issues surrounding Facebook, Portal seems like a stupidly brave bet from them.

โโ๐บ Social Media & TV Ecosystem
In a connected world, #TV industry could've been left behind. But it has found social media as a unique opportunity to organically reach its own audience through various platforms.
To gain a better understanding about how #SocialMedia posts generated by TV-affiliated accounts are being created and consumed, Nielsen has looked at over 142,000 pieces of content during a three week period just ahead of the fall TV season. These pieces of TV-related content generated more than 154 million engagements, likes, comments, re-posts, etc., across #Twitter, #Facebook and #Instagram.

โโ๐ Facebook's ad revenue will soon mainly rely on Instagram
There's no doubt that, so far, #Facebookโs acquisition of #Instagram has been a total success - acquired for $1 billion in 2012, now it has more than a billion users and an estimate of $8-9 billion in revenue this year.
Last quarter, Instagram generated an estimated $2 billion, or about 15 percent, of Facebookโs $13 billion in ad revenue, according to by Andy Hargreaves of KeyBanc Capital Markets. Hargreaves expects Instagram to grow to about 30% of Facebookโs ad revenue in two years, as well as nearly 70% of the companyโs new revenue by 2020 โ driving the majority of Facebookโs growth.

โโ๐ฅ Emoji Equality on Twitter
New changes on #Twitter mean that for the first time each #Emoji counts as the same number of characters in a tweet. Previously ๐, ๐๐ฝ, and ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ would have used 2, 4, and 9 characters respectively.
Under Twitter's new system, all #Emojis are equal and use two characters.

โโ๐ฐ The Future of Google's Revenue
#Google introduced several new products at its big hardware event on Tuesday. Among the devices were the new Pixel 3 phones, a new tablet called Pixel Slate and a smart home device called Google Home Hub.
While Googleโs hardware ambitions are still limited and widely considered a means to an end (which is to collect more data and sell more advertising), the range of the companyโs products and services has widened significantly over the years (with companies such as Access, Calico, CapitalG, GV, Nest, Verily, #Waymo and X).
#Googleโs many side-activities have steadily grown over the years and in 2017, the companyโs non-advertising revenue reached $15.5 billion, up from just $667 million in 2008. More importantly though, the percentage of Googleโs revenue that didnโt come from advertising sales grew from 3.1% in 2008 to 14% last year, indicating that the search giant can no longer be considered a one trick pony.

โโ๐ The War of Search Engines
Nearly 30 million searches are entered every day in the search box of #DuckDuckGo. Unlike #Google, this search engine does not collect user data and does not use personalised advertising.
This, and probably the steadily growing list of data scandals has been assisting a sustained upward trend for the past few years. In 2015, the milestone of ten million searches in one day was cracked for the first time. Two years later, it was already 20 million and in October 2018 it is almost at 30 million.
Nevertheless, compared to Google, these are still very small figures - according to TechCrunch, the search giant handles at least 3 billion search requests a day.

โโ๐ US Internet and Social Media Usage Plateau
#Internet usage, as well as #SocialMedia adoption and device ownership, have seemingly reached a plateau after several years of growth. For example, the percentage of US adults using social media rests at 69% this year, unchanged from 2016.
Internet use, for its part, now stands at 89% of US adults, up only marginally from 2016 (88%). And device use is largely unchanged, too:
- 95% of US adults own or use a cellphone, flat from 2016;
- 77% own or use a #smartphone, unchanged from 2016;
- 73% own or use a desktop or laptop computer, down from 78% in 2016; and
- 53% own or use a tablet, up slightly from 51%.
