What Google earns with the spread of news

Media companies deliver
news that is increasingly being disseminated by tech giants. This creates conflicts. A study now quantifies how much money Google should earn by offering news.

The friend-enemy relationship between Google and the publishers of newspapers and magazines, who are increasingly investing in digital formats and distribution channels, now has a price tag. According to a study published by the American interest group News Media Alliance (NMA), the search engine group last year achieved a turnover of 4.7 billion dollars, or around 4.2 billion euros, with the marketing of news.

The counterbalance that has to be made here is as follows: Google attracts media attention by displaying links to news content in its general search results and on the Google News service. The publishers of the respective media brands must use the attention for these contents in order to find paying users for their offers as well as to attract advertising customers.

Competitive advertising
Accordingly, the media allow Google to search their online offerings for information in order to create a news overview (Google News) or to generate a link for corresponding search queries from users, which is supplemented by a short text excerpt and an image. Google also markets its search results through the placement of advertising - the Internet company's main source of income. This makes Google (also Facebook) and the media competitors in the highly competitive digital advertising market.

While Google has been pointing out for years how much the company is interested in a good relationship with the media and therefore gets them around ten billion clicks on their websites every month, the publishers feel that Google has been playing them for just as long. They say the revenues generated by the US company with journalistic content are disproportionate to the revenue they generate. Attention all well and good, but the monetization would not correspond to the value of the content that Google is selfishly wiping out. The turnover of 4.7 billion dollars now calculated with the help of a consulting firm is supposed to prove this imbalance.

Microsoft sacks journalists to replace them with robots

Users of the homepages of the MSN website and Edge browser will now see news stories generated by AI

Dozens of journalists have been sacked after Microsoft decided to replace them with artificial intelligence software.

Staff who maintain the news homepages on Microsoft’s MSN website and its Edge browser – used by millions of Britons every day – have been told that they will be no longer be required because robots can now do their jobs.

Around 27 individuals employed by PA Media – formerly the Press Association – were told on Thursday that they would lose their jobs in a month’s time after Microsoft decided to stop employing humans to select, edit and curate news articles on its homepages.

Publishers attack Google for refusing to pay for news

Alphabet Inc.’s Google has used its dominance to strong-arm news organizations into giving up their content without adequate compensation, a trade group for publishers said in a report to the Justice Department, which is investigating the internet giant for potential antitrust violations.

Google relies heavily on news content to draw traffic and fuel its advertising business, yet it has so much power as an online platform that news organizations can’t realistically negotiate content licenses with the company, the News Media Alliance said in the paper made public Thursday. That’s unlike Facebook Inc. and Apple Inc., which pay publishers.

“There remains little bargaining power with Google and, as a result, news publishers must consent to these practically unlimited uses by Google without compensation,” said Danielle Coffey, the general counsel for the News Media Alliance, in a statement.

Fake news on Covid-19 government initatives boost phishing in Brazil

About one in eight Internet users have accessed a website with malicious content during the first months of the pandemic, research suggests.

The spread of fake news relating to government initiatives around Covid-19 placed Brazil on a list of countries most affected by phishing attacks, according to new research on spam and phishing published by security firm Kaspersky.

According to the report, about one in eight Internet users in Brazil (12.9%) accessed, between April and June 2020, at least one link that led to websites with malicious content. This is well above the global average, of 8,26% within the same period of time.
