Facial recognition technology is inevitable—it’s time we make it human-centered
As big tech companies press pause on developing this surveillance tool, others are racing to commercialize it.
On the back of the Black Lives Matters movement, IBM decided to get out of the facial recognition (FR) business altogether. Amazon announced a one-year moratorium on police use of its FR software, Rekognition, and Microsoft declared that it would do the same until there is a federal law to regulate the technology.
This was celebrated by many as an important step given how this technology is rapidly becoming one of the most powerful surveillance tools ever invented. In addition to the privacy implications of requiring mass databanks of faces in order for the technology to be effective, it has been proven to reinforce race and gender bias. The ACLU ran a test in 2018 on Rekognition that concluded that “nearly 40 percent of Rekognition’s false matches in our test were of people of color.”

Alipay allows pet owners to buy insurance by using facial recognition on their cats and dogs
Pet insurance has existed for a while, but it often involves filling out boring paper forms and taking a trip to the vet to implant a microchip in their furry friends. China’s e-payment giant Alipay has another idea.
The platform, run by Ant Financial – an affiliate of South China Morning Post owner Alibaba – has launched its first ever insurance program for cats and dogs. Enrolment is simple: Using the Alipay app, owners can set up a digital profile of their animals by taking a few pictures.
A close-up photo of the animal is used to establish a record of its nose print. Similar to how smartphones and law enforcement agencies use fingerprints to identify humans, dogs and cats are believed to have unique and permanent skin patterns on their noses.

Special Report: Rite Aid deployed facial recognition systems in hundreds of U.S. stores
(Reuters) - Over about eight years, the American drugstore chain Rite Aid Corp quietly added facial recognition systems to 200 stores across the United States, in one of the largest rollouts of such technology among retailers in the country, a Reuters investigation found.
In the hearts of New York and metro Los Angeles, Rite Aid deployed the technology in largely lower-income, non-white neighbourhoods, according to a Reuters analysis. And for more than a year, the retailer used state-of-the-art facial recognition technology from a company with links to China and its authoritarian government.

Singapore's Universal Studios deploys facial recognition for entry
SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Visitors to Universal Studios in Singapore will now have to pass through facial recognition scanners to enter the park, in the city-state’s latest foray with a technology that has stoked privacy concerns.
Resorts World Sentosa (RWS), which owns the sprawling area of tourist attractions, hotels and restaurants in which the park sits, said the scheme which started this month would help smooth access for guests.
“Facial recognition provides contactless verification of tickets and ticket holders, enabling our customers to enjoy our park experience in a more efficient and seamless manner,” RWS said in an emailed statement.
