Why China’s Hong Kong crackdown could backfire

The Year of the Ox has begun darkly for Hong konger.

leaders ultimately must respond to voters, many of whom care deeply about human rights and are demanding tougher policies toward China. When European democracies finally join the Biden administration’s nascent anti-China coalition, the credit should go not to America, but to Xi.

Such a coalition could impose painful costs on China for its actions in Hong Kong. After all, financial sanctions would cause chaos in global markets. But they still have a wide array of other options to squeeze China.

Decoupling China from global technology supply chains currently seems inconceivable, but could become a reality if the coalition agrees to a new arrangement similar to the Coordinating Committee for Multilateral Export Controls, which choked off Western technology transfers to the Soviet bloc during the Cold War.

Western democracies could also deny Chinese leaders the international prestige they seek by curtailing high-level exchanges and vigorously contesting Chinese influence in multilateral organizations.

This is the first year since the handover of #HongKong's sovereignty without an annual July 1st protest march, we have prepared a summary of important 71 protests over the years. It is also a history of the decline of Hong Kong's #freedomofexpression.

It's very hard to write a caption for such a traumatic episode of the #HongKong protests, which aftermath continues to be felt today. Only a few years ago, it was impossible to imagine anything so much as violent conflicts happening in a protest in #HK, after all, our protests were known to the world to be peaceful and extremely orderly. But #PolyU, a university in the heart of the city, was literally turned into a warzone, by the unscrupulous #CCP.

Two years ago today, the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) laid siege to Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Poly U) for 13 days.

The police trapped students inside and arrested anyone who tried to leave or enter including first-aiders, volunteers, and reporters.

HKPF claimed that protesters were hiding in disguise.

They shot:
1,458 tear gas canisters
1,391 rubber bullets
325 bean bag rounds
256 sponge grenades
in one day.

1,100 people were arrested through the 2 weeks.

Universities are for education and growth, not war.

The government failed us. The police never meant to protect us. The PolyU siege is a prominent example of HKPF's horrific abuse of power and the need for all of us to stand in solidarity with our peers.

This fight is for every Hongkonger and student. 💛

In the Hong Kong protest case, a married couple, Jiang Shaoxi and Chen Yunyi, have been sentenced to 37 and 36 months in prison, respectively. They recently became parents, with Chen giving birth just four months ago. The judge acknowledged the couple's circumstances but did not consider it a valid factor for reduced sentencing. As a result, they face separation from their newborn child during their incarceration. This highlights the emotional toll and challenges faced by families affected by such cases. #HongKongProtest #SeparationFromChild #JusticeSystem

Jun 15: Leung Ling-kit wore a yellow raincoat with an umbrella standing at Pacific Place Patio at 4:30. He wrote “Carrie Lam kills Hong Kong” & “Black Cops are cold blooded” on a banner and hang it at the building for everyone to see. Police and negotiators went but did not allow anyone to go near him. At 9:15pm, he jumped down. That was the beginning of the 2 million+1 people march the next day.

People still commemorate him in Hong Kong to this day while countless of #HKPolice was standing by as if having a flower in hand can damage #nationalsecurity. This is the excuse they use to arrest people anyway. The laws that we having been fighting against, the extradition bill, national security law & article 23 are laws that criminalize thoughts.
