In November 2019, conflicts erupted at Polytechnic University and protesters gathered in Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong. "The Court Line" reported that 333 people were charged with participating in riots. As of Nov 2023, 72% of cases were concluded, with a 96% conviction rate. In Yau Ma Tei, 164 individuals were convicted, with 5 directly involved in violence. Over 70% were convicted for wearing black attire or protective gear. Judges noted the severity of the protests, sentencing nearly half to 5 years or more in prison.
