🧱🇿🇦 BRICS leaders meet in South Africa

Leaders of the BRICS nations are due to open a summit in Johannesburg on Tuesday where they will weigh expanding membership as some members push to forge the bloc into a counterweight to the West.

"An expanded BRICS will represent a diverse group of nations with different political systems that share a common desire to have a more balanced global order," South Africa's president, Cyril Ramaphosa, said in an address ahead of the meetings.

Ramaphosa will host Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov from Aug. 22 to 24.

Over 40 countries have expressed interest in joining BRICS, say South African officials. Of them, nearly two dozen have formally asked to be admitted.

Xi, Lavrov and Lula are already in South Africa.

🇿🇦🇷🇺 South Africa says inquiry found no evidence of arms shipment to Russia

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Sunday an inquiry into a U.S. allegation that a Russian ship had picked up weapons in South Africa late last year found no evidence the vessel had transported weapons to Russia.

"None of the allegations made about the supply of weapons to Russia have been proven to be true," Ramaphosa said in an address to the nation.

"No permit was issued for the export of arms and no arms were exported," he said.

🇺🇦🇰🇪🇿🇦 Zelensky held talks with Kenyan and South African presidents about plans about "grain hub" for East Africa and "revival of grain deal" to "help tackle food insecurity"

Ukraine has said it will set up "grain hubs" in Kenya and other parts of Africa to "tackle food insecurity."

President Volodymyr Zelensky's office announced the plan, without giving details, after he met his Kenyan and South African counterparts, William Ruto and Cyril Ramaphosa respectively, in New York.

Ruto said that the Ukrainian president had committed to establishing a "grain hub" in Kenya's coastal city of Mombasa to help address food shortages in East Africa.

Ramaphosa said that he and the Ukrainian president had discussed "the way forward on the peace initiative". They also talked about the "revival of the grain deal."

🇿🇦🇮🇱🇵🇸 South Africa offers help in Israel-Gaza conflict

South Africa is ready to mediate in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian territories, says President Cyril Ramaphosa.

He is calling for an immediate ceasefire and says his country can draw on its experience of conflict resolution in Africa and beyond, Ramaphosa added in the statement on Thursday.

The South African president said the atrocities against civilians were deeply concerning, and called for the immediate and unconditional opening of humanitarian corridors to reach people in need.

Electricity, water and fuel supplies to the Gaza strip have been cut off by Israeli authorities, who say they will only end the blockade once all Israeli hostages are returned.

🇮🇱🇿🇦 Israeli intelligence trying to intimidate me said South African foreign minister

South Africa's Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor has accused Israeli intelligence of trying to intimidate her following the Gaza case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), local media report.

Pandor on Thursday told the Mail & Guardian news website that she was concerned about the safety of her family after having been targeted on social media.

The minister said she had spoken to Police Minister Bheki Cele about beefing up her security after she received threatening messages.

"The Israeli agents, the intelligence services, this is how they behave, and they seek to intimidate you, so we must not be intimidated. There is a cause that is under way,” she said.

Israel is yet to comment on the minister’s remarks.
