🇬🇧🇾🇪🇺🇸 Conflict Escalation in the Red Sea
Chronicle of Events for January 31-04, 2024

On the night of February 3-4, the coalition launched a new attack on several regions in Yemen that are under the control of the Ansarala movement. Despite the intensity of the attack, the group once again demonstrated its resilience against such massive raids.

The Houthis themselves continue to conduct raids on civilian ships passing through the Red Sea. For the second time since the escalation began, they utilized unmanned boats. We can expect Ansarala to use these devices more frequently, although their potential combat effectiveness against coalition ships raises doubts.

Meanwhile, thousands of people in many cities in Yemen continue to protest in support of the people of Palestine. During one of these protests, Houthi leaders attempted to urge Muslim states to adopt a tougher stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

🇮🇷 🇾🇪 🇰🇷 In anticipation of the warships from countries in the European Union arriving in the Red Sea, there are also changes happening in the composition of other naval formations.

▪️ According to Iranian sources, the destroyer Alborz completed its journey back to Iran a couple of days ago. A similar ship, the Alvand, has arrived in Yemen to replace it.

It is not clear exactly how many ships are in the detachment and who is accompanying the destroyer on this long voyage. Meanwhile, the reconnaissance vessel Bekhshad is still operating east of Djibouti.

▪️ Changes will soon take place in the composition of the Combined Maritime Forces-153 formation, which currently consists of the Japanese and South Korean destroyers Akebono and Yang Mancheon.

Less than a week ago, the destroyer Tae Jong left the South Korean port of Jeju and is expected to reach the Horn of Africa after February 20. The crew of Tae Jong will then replace their colleagues from Yang Mancheon.

🔻Despite the decrease in the intensity of Houthi strikes, operations and missions of various countries continue, and for the European Union, they are just beginning. Attention to the region has not diminished.

At the same time, the absence of Houthi strikes is most likely because many companies have either stopped using this route or have distanced themselves as much as possible from Israel, the United States, and Great Britain.

It turns out, to put it mildly, not very successful. Today, an American ship came under attack. The extent of the damage is unknown, but a retaliatory strike from the coalition will undoubtedly follow soon.

🇬🇧🇾🇪🇺🇸 Last night in the Red Sea region, the US-British coalition air force and the Houthis once again launched mutual strikes.

▪️ US and British aircraft targeted locations in the Nahdain and Attan mountains south of the capital of the Ansarallah government in Sana'a. Yemeni media also reported an attack on Al-Daylami airbase to the north.

▪️ Two more strikes occurred on agricultural land in the province of Aabs, and five in the province of Sana'a. In Taiz, strikes targeted telecommunications networks in Haifang and Mukban. A total of 22 joint US-British airstrikes.

▪️ US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the attack was the largest military action against the Houthis in recent weeks. Support for this operation was provided by Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.

🔻However, the Houthis were not deterred by another major air raid: the oil tanker MV Torm Thor was attacked in Aden using anti-ship missiles. Additionally, the group’s representative, Yahya Sari, reported the launch of drones against coalition warships in the Red Sea.

Meanwhile, the US Army Central Command reported that the US Navy destroyer USS Mason had shot down an anti-ship ballistic missile launched into the Gulf of Aden from Yemen. This interception likely took place near the ship MV Torm Thor.

🇾🇪🇺🇸 A recent series of US-British coalition attacks on Yemen, occurring yesterday in retaliation for another Houthi assault on a container ship, was unremarkable.

The Liberian-flagged Pinocchio departed from the Saudi port of Jeddah in the Red Sea and was targeted by two anti-ship missiles near the island of Labuan.

🔻In response, American F/A-18E/F fighters from the aircraft carrier launched at least 15 missiles into the western and northern regions of Houthi-controlled territory.

The targets once again included areas where missile launchers were believed to be located, as well as ammunition depots and drone assembly sites (as stated by the US Central Command).

❗️It is worth noting that the coalition forces had prepared for the raid in advance. U-2S aircraft from Akrotiri and P-8A from Sheikh Isa, excluding MQ-1C, operated off the coast of Yemen yesterday and the day before.

Considering the increasing use of unmanned boats by the Houthis, the deployment of R-8A anti-submarine aircraft in the Red Sea will become regular.

🇾🇪🇺🇸 An exchange of blows recently occurred in the Red Sea region between the Yemeni Ansarallah movement and the US-British coalition.

▪️ Early in the morning, the Houthis launched four anti-ship missiles at US Navy ships located 50 nautical miles southwest of Al-Hodeidah. Official reports indicate that none of the missiles hit their target.

▪️ Another attack took place 76 nautical miles west of Al-Hodeidah: as per the UK Maritime Trade Authority, a missile fired by a Yemeni group struck a merchant ship, causing damage.

▪️ Houthi missiles targeted the tanker PACIFIC 01 at a location 88 nautical miles northwest of Al-Hodeidah. The group claimed to have hit the intended target, but details of the attack remain scarce.

🔻It is likely that these new attacks by the Yemenis are strategically timed to coincide with the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and also in retaliation to recent coalition airstrikes. Local media sources have reported 14 airstrikes conducted by the US Air Force in the last 24 hours on Al-Hodeidah, Hajjah, Absa, and Ras Issa.

Given this context, the recent statement by Ansarallah leader Abdulmalik Badr al-Din al-Houthi is noteworthy. He claimed that since October 7, 2023, the Houthis have attacked 73 ships, while 34 people have lost their lives due to coalition attacks in Yemen. The movement's leader also issued a threat to obstruct the passage of ships not only through the Red Sea but also through the Indian Ocean.

🇾🇪🇺🇸 A few hours after the events of yesterday, the Houthis once again launched attacks in the Red Sea region. This time, Ansarallah fighters targeted two merchant ships. Meanwhile, the forces of the American-British coalition have not responded yet.

▪️ Last night, British maritime security company Ambrey reported an attack on a liquefied gas tanker passing off the coast of Al-Hodeidah: two explosions occurred near the ship, but further details were not disclosed.

▪️ Another anti-ship missile was fired at an unidentified vessel west of Al-Hodeidah. An explosion was recorded near the starboard side. Fortunately, the crew was unharmed, and the cargo ship continued on its designated route.

🔻Therefore, at least five attacks have taken place in the last 24 hours: four targeted merchant ships, while another targeted US Navy ships. The exact circumstances of most incidents remain unknown.

The surge in Yemeni attacks in the Red Sea could be linked to the start of Ramadan. Additionally, if there is an Israeli offensive on Rafah, as approved yesterday by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the number of attacks might rise further.

🇾🇪🇺🇸 In reports on events in the Red Sea region, we have mentioned repeatedly that regular American bombings failed to cause significant damage to the Ansrallah movement and drastically reduce their combat potential.

The reason for this is partly illustrated by this satellite image: it clearly shows that the Houthis have effectively positioned some parts of the coastline for false missile launches.

Interestingly, the US Air Force eventually targeted some of these positions, later announcing the destruction of another important target. However, for some reason, such “effective” airstrikes did not deter attacks on civilian ships passing the Yemeni coast.

Once again, the Houthis have demonstrated that the “necessity is the mother of invention” approach can be effectively utilized even when facing a significantly more technologically advanced enemy.

❗️🌍🎞 The escalation of the situation in the Middle East: highlights of the week April 5 - 11, 2024

▪️
In the Red Sea region, Ansar Allah fighters fired another missile at coalition ships. The munition was intercepted on approach by air defense.

▪️In turn, the anti-Houthi coalition air force struck the al Mandhar neighborhood in al Hudaydah province. The strikes hit an air defense unit and a ground observation station. Civilians were also injured.

▪️A few days later, coalition forces again bombed Houthi positions. A series of explosions were recorded near al Hudaydah International Airport and the Al Jabbana area, where an air defense base is located.

▪️In Syria, the Israelis used artillery and air strikes to attack Syrian Armed Forces facilities in Daraa province. The strikes were in response to increasing attacks by pro-Iranian forces from the republic's territory.

▪️Meanwhile, Iranian-backed proxies fired a missile at a US Army base in Deir ez-Zor. The Conoco oil refinery area, which is regularly attacked, came under fire.

▪️On the Greater Idlib fronts, the Syrian Armed Forces continued to attack militant targets using FPV drones. The Syrian government forces targeted the facilities of the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham terrorist organization.

▪️In Idlib itself, daily demonstrations against Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham and its security services continued. Residents of the province demanded the ouster of the group's leader, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, and the release of prisoners.

🇾🇪🇺🇸 Last night, Yemeni Houthi rebels carried out another attack on international shipping in the Red Sea region. According to open-source data, two cargo ships were targeted.

▪️South of Aden, a cargo ship flying the flag of the island nation of Antigua and Barbuda was attacked. Two missiles were fired at it, with one hitting the target: a fire broke out on board, but the crew was able to quickly extinguish it.

▪️In the same area, the Houthis struck another bulk carrier with an anti-ship missile. According to some reports, a small fire also broke out on this vessel.

🔻Notably, the effectiveness of both Houthi strikes was confirmed by monitoring resources associated with the British Navy. However, the damage to the two ships was not critical, allowing them to continue on their way.

Likely, the latest "Ansar Allah" strikes were a reaction to yesterday's events in the center of the Palestinian enclave: the release of Israeli hostages and the shelling of Nuseirat, which led to the deaths and injuries of several hundred civilians.

🇮🇱🇾🇪On the non-obvious results of the Israeli Air Force attack on Al-Hudaydah

Starting from April 2022, a fragile peace has been maintained on the territory of Yemen between the previously warring Ansar Allah movement and the internationally recognized government of Yemen, headed by its chairman Rashad al-Alimi, affiliated with Saudi Arabia.

And if the latter initially supported the strikes of the American-British coalition on the territory of Yemen, then after the attack of the Israeli Air Force on the port of Al-Hudaydah, the situation changed somewhat - the once warring parties were finally able to agree on de-escalating tensions.

In particular, this was expressed in the initiation of meetings to discuss long-standing issues, including the further peaceful settlement of the conflict and the establishment of economic ties to ensure a stable situation throughout the territory of Yemen.

📌Apparently, the resonant strike of the Israelis pushed the warring parties to an agreement against the background of the risks of an even greater deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the country. The fact is that the port of Al-Hudaydah is a key point for the import of fuel and humanitarian aid into Yemen.

And in case of its shutdown, the parties need to agree on alternative supply routes, which is essentially what was done - it was possible to agree on the resumption of flights of the national airline Yemenia Airways, as well as the mutual cancellation of banking restrictions for the subsequent establishment of trade ties.

🔻Nevertheless, it is not worth expecting that the parties will be able to fully resolve the conflict in the near future. At the moment, we are talking only about an attempt to temporarily mitigate the confrontation against the background of the deteriorating humanitarian situation and the risk of another round of tension between the Houthis and the groups supported by Saudi Arabia.
