In the Sumy region, one person was injured in the Druzhkivka community due to a strike.

Russian Pilots Remain Reluctant to Fly Close to the Frontline

Last week, the Russian Ministry of Defense published three videos (1, 2, 3) showing combat sorties flown by Sukhoi Su-34 strike aircraft on the Zaporizhzhia axis. The fighter-bombers are seen dropping several FAB-500 air-dropped bombs equipped with Universal Gliding and Correction Modules (UMPKs). A volunteer assisting our team has geolocated the release and impact points visible in the footage.

As it turned out, the first two videos depict the same event, with one simply flipped horizontally. The aircraft was flying in the vicinity of the village of Komysh-Zoria in the Polohy district, Zaporizhzhia region, when it released the bombs. The distance from this point to the closest part of the frontline is approximately 40 km [25 mi]. Additionally, one of these videos purports to show the bomb impact points. However, the geolocation puts them in Chasiv Yar, more than 160 km [99 mi] away from Komysh-Zoria. Air-dropped bombs, with or without UMPK, cannot fly that far, therefore, the Ministry of Defense has compiled footage of different events into a single video.

In the third video, the bombs’ release point is in the vicinity of the villages of Katerynivka and Vyshniuvate, on the border between the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, located approximately 35 km [22 mi] from the frontline. The bomb impact points were geolocated near the village of Staromaiorske, with explosions occurring on its northern edge. The distance between the release and impact points is 49 km [30 mi]. However, given the Ministry of Defense's previous editing practices, we cannot be certain that the video accurately depicts the related events.

Nevertheless, the bombs are dropped approximately 35 to 405 kilometers [22-28 mi] from the frontline and even further away from Ukrainian medium and long-range air defense systems, which are not positioned directly on the frontline. Thus, despite the current shortages of air defense missiles and systems reported by Ukrainian authorities, Russian aircraft operate at a significant distance from the front, reducing the effective range of their air-dropped bombs with UMPK modules to only 20 to 25 kilometers [12-15 mi] beyond the frontline. However, even that presents a serious danger for Ukrainian forces, not to mention airstrikes aimed directly at forward lines.

Countering this threat requires a comprehensive solution. First, enhancing the coverage of near-rear areas with point defense anti-air assets and short to medium-range systems will help curtail Russian UAV flights in the operational rear, which conduct reconnaissance and target valuable assets such as Patriot missile launchers. Second, once this issue has been addressed and additional long-range defense batteries are delivered by allies, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be able to deploy them closer to the frontline, further reducing the area of impact of Russian bomber aircraft. However, the key unknown in this equation remains the pace and volume of supply of air defense systems and missiles from Western allies.

Over the last 24 hours, at least 12 civilians were killed and 69 others were injured as a result of strikes.

In the Kharkiv region, seven people were killed and 21 others were wounded in a series of missile attacks on the city of Kharkiv. 10 residents were injured in a missile strike on the town of Liubotyn. Two civilians sustained injuries in an airstrike on the village of Zolochiv. 13 people were wounded in an airstrike on the town of Derhachi. One person was injured in a UAV attack on the village of Ryasne. One resident was killed in a strike on the village of Ridkodub. One civilian was injured in an attack on the village of Prykolotne.

In the Donetsk region, three people were wounded in an airstrike on the village of Pivnichne.

In the Kherson region, two people sustained injuries as a result of airstrikes in the Beryslav district and the Kherson district.

In the Zaporizhzhia region, one resident was killed due to shelling in the village of Mala Tokmachka.
