Hong Kong police job vacancies rise for 4th consecutive year

//Vacancies in the Hong Kong Police Force have risen for the fourth straight year, recent government figures showed.

... the Secretary for Security said in a written response that there have been 5,706 openings during the 2021-2022 financial year so far ā€“ an 8 per cent increase from the previous year when there were 5,258 vacancies.

The number of vacancies in 2018-2019 and 2019-20 were 1,440 and 2,235, respectively.

The figures ā€“ up until December 31 last year ā€“ show that most vacancies were for rank and file, or junior police officer, positions. The 2021-2022 recruitment target for junior police officers was 1,350. Just 423 have joined the force.

Months-long protests and unrest in the summer of 2019, initially against a controversial extradition bill, caused the cityā€™s trust in the police force to plummet...//

Xinjiang Police Files: Inside a Chinese internment camp

The highly coercive and potentially lethal systems of control used against minority groups in Chinaā€™s internment camps have been revealed in a giant cache of secret documents shared with the BBC.

China insists the network of secure facilities built across its far western region of Xinjiang are simply ā€œschoolsā€ for combatting extremism to which ā€œstudentsā€ sign up willingly. But the contents of the leaked Xinjiang Police Files suggest a different story.

Taking information from the leaked documents, the BBC has reconstructed one of the camps ā€“ the Shufu County New Vocational Skills Education and Training Centre - to reveal the methods used inside.

China opens unofficial police stations in Britain to hunt down people for their return

China has opened unofficial police stations in London as part of a growing network of Communist Party-linked offices accused of hunting down and blackmailing Chinese citizens to force them to return home.

Chinese authorities have established 54 ā€œoverseas police service centresā€ around the world in the last few years, according to a new report, as Beijing seeks to expand Chinese powers abroad.

Why are Chinese police operating in Canada, while our own government and security services apparently look the other way?

In China, the high-profile TV drama In The Name Of The People has become a smash hit. In that show, Chinese agents enter the U.S. posing as businessmen so they can repatriate a factory manager who had fled abroad with huge ill-gotten wealth.

But a new study by the European non-governmental agency Safeguard Defenders suggests that there might be some truth to the fiction. According to the NGO, the Fuzhou Public Security Bureau has established more than 50 ā€œoverseas police service centresā€ in cities around the world ā€“ including three publicly documented ones in Toronto, home to Canadaā€™s largest Chinese diaspora.

China hits back at FBI claim of unauthorized ā€˜police stationsā€™ in US

China has contested claims it was operating unauthorized ā€œpolice stationsā€ on US soil, calling the sites volunteer-run, after the FBI director said he was ā€œvery concernedā€ about unauthorized stations that have been linked to Beijingā€™s influence operations.

Safeguard Defenders, a Europe-based human rights organization, published a report in September revealing the presence of dozens of Chinese police ā€œservice stationsā€ in large cities around the world, including New York.
