๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ We Are Not Numbers

"When we write about martyrs, we must remember that the occupation killed them. We must not leave the deed to the unknown."

Today, the occupation killed the martyr Dr. Refaat Al-Areer, one of the most prominent English professors in the Gaza Strip and the founder of We Are Not Numbers. Refaat, a writer and activist, empowered Palestinians to write their own stories, to take back the narrative, and to be heard by the world. He was a leading expert in Palestinian history and the zionist occupation, amplifying his principled anti-zionist stance to the world.

His final tweet was: "The Democratic Part and Biden are responsible for the Gaza genocide perpetrated by Israel."

"If I must die,
you must live
to tell my story."

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ The legacy of Dr. Refaat Alareer

We are devastated by Israel's murder of our dear colleague, friend and mentor Dr. Refaat Alareer in Gaza City on 6 December 2023. Throughout this genocide, Refaat never stopped writing, supporting his students and bringing Gaza's voice to the world. We will make sure it continues to be heard.

This is an excerpt from the EI livestream on 20 November 2023, during which executive director Ali Abunimah, writer and scholar Yousef M. Aljamal and Palestinian novelist Ahmed Masoud talk about the incalculable impact Alareer has had on his students in Gaza.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Israel's calculated murder of Gazan scholar Dr Sufyan Tayeh |
The New Arab

Dr Tayeh, the current head of the Islamic University in Gaza and a distinguished member of the theoretical physics and applied mathematics communities, was considered to be in the top 2% of science researchers worldwide in 2021. His death has been widely mourned by Palestinians across social media.

"Israel's systematic assault on Gaza has ripped the tree of knowledge from its foundations. The resumption of airstrikes has left thousands more dead, including one of the world's leading physicists and mathematicians, Dr. Sufyan Tayeh. This is his story:

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Israeli Strike on Refaat al-Areer Apparently Deliberate| EuroMed HR Monitor

The Israeli airstrike that killed Prof. Refaat al-Areer was apparently deliberate, Euro-Med Monitor concluded on Friday. The apartment where Refaat and his family were sheltering was surgically bombed out of the entire building where itโ€™s located, according to corroborated eyewitness and family accounts.

This came after weeks of death threats that Refaat received online and by phone from Israeli accounts.
We call for an immediate investigation into this apparently deliberate and targeted killing of a prominent Palestinian academic, writer, poet, and activist.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Naji al-Ali | Palestine Diary

"The child #Handala is my signature, everyone asks me about him wherever I go. His name is Handala and he has promised the people that he will remain true to himself. I drew him as a child who is not beautiful, his hair is like the hair of a hedgehog who uses his thorns as a weapon. Handala is not a fat, happy, relaxed, or pampered child, he is barefooted like the refugee camp children.

Handala was born ten years old, and he will always be ten years old. At that age I left my homeland, and when he returns, Handala will still be ten, and then he will start growing up. The laws of nature do not apply to him. He is unique. Things will become normal again when the homeland returns. I presented him to the poor and named him Handala as a symbol of bitterness. At first he was a Palestinian child, but his consciousness developed to have a national and then a global and human horizon.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Naji al-Ali was one of the most prominent cartoonists in the Arab world. Sarcastic, poignant and perhaps too bold, al-Aliโ€™s cartoons were drawn from his experience as a Palestinian refugee since childhood and clearly reflected his political stance, which was often critical of the Arab regimes.

The following extracts are drawn from an interview with Radwa Ashour, novelist and professor of English literature at Ain Shams University, during the summer of 1984 in Budapest.. It was published in the periodical Al Muwagaha in 1985, only two years before al-Ali was assassinated in London in 1987 at the age of 50.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Ghassan Kanafani: Voice of Palestine (1936-1972) - Palestine Chronicle โ€“

Kanafani was one of the most important figures in 20th century literature. He was also a refugee, a revolutionary Marxist and an internationalist. The Israelis claimed the assassination was a response to the Lod Airport attack two months earlier, although Kanafani had played no direct role in this. He was, according to the obituary in the Lebanese Daily Star, โ€˜a commando who never fired a gun, whose weapon was a ball-point pen, and his arena the newspaper pages.โ€™ Kanafani was at the time of his death the official spokesman of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the editor of its paper #AlHadaf. The organisation saluted โ€˜the leader, the writer, the #strategist, and the visionary.
