Israel is openly carrying out ethnic cleansing inside Gaza, driving Palestinians outside their homeland as happened in 1948. And yet, just as during the first “#Nakba”, Israel's lies and deceptions dominate the West’s media and political narrative.

So Israel is taking advantage of this moment to “finish the job”. The final destination is clearly in view, as, in truth, it has been for more than seven decades. The crime is unfolding step by step, the pace quickening. And yet senior politicians and journalists in the West – like their predecessors – continue to be blind to it all.

Alison Russell was detained by Israeli forces while documenting home demolitions in Masafer Yatta in the occupied West Bank. She was deported following a perfunctory hearing where Israeli police accused her of "supporting terrorism."

In the case of human rights defender Alison Russell, the far-fetched charges of “supporting terrorism” or “keyboard terrorism” cover up the real reason for her detention and deportation. In court, the state asserted that “she had many times disrupted the activities of the #IOF troops, whenever she came in contact with them”. Indeed, it is highly disturbing for the troops to have outside #observers and witnesses present where acts of oppression take place, which often constitute blatant violations of International Law.

The earth-shattering events in Palestine starting on October 7 have taken many people by surprise. However, attentive observers were not among them.

Few expected that Palestinian fighters would be parachuting into southern Israel on October 7; that instead of capturing a single Israeli soldier – as done in 2006 – hundreds of Israelis, including many soldiers and civilians, would find themselves captive in besieged Gaza.

The reason behind the ‘surprise,’ however, is the same reason that Israel is still reeling under collective shock, which is the tendency to pay close attention to political discourses and intelligence analyses of Israel and its supporters – while largely neglecting the Palestinian discourse.

🇵🇸 Saving Masafer Yatta | Mondoweiss Documentary August 2022

In May 2022 the Israeli Supreme Court ruled to expel the Palestinians living in the South Hebron Hills of the occupied West Bank, known locally as Masafer Yatta, and hand their land over to the Israeli military.

The army has used the land as an active firing zone for years, putting the local communities there at risk. Now, with the backing of the Supreme Court, the army is seeking to completely rid the area of its Palestinian inhabitants. Rights groups say it’s an act that would amount to forcible transfer, a war crime under international law.

With no hope left in the Israeli legal system, the Palestinians in Masafer Yatta are appealing to the international community to help save their communities.

🇵🇸 israel approves largest West Bank land grab in three decades

Israeli authorities last month approved the largest seizure of land in the occupied West Bank in over three decades, anti-settlement watchdog Peace Now revealed on 3 July.

The activists said the approval allows for the appropriation of 12.7 square kilometers of land in the Jordan Valley, northeast of the West Bank city of Ramallah. By illegally authorizing their seizure, Tel Aviv is allowing the land to be leased to Israelis and banning private Palestinian ownership.

According to Peace Now, this marks the largest single appropriation approved since the 1993 Oslo Accords. The move comes after the seizure of 8 square kilometers of land in the West Bank in March and 2.6 square kilometers in February.

“2024 marks the peak in the extent of declarations of state land,” Peace Now said in a statement.

Yet even the partial loosening of restrictions on withheld customs money to the PA doesn’t come close to solving the PA’s economic crisis. Israel’s economic sanctions have forced hundreds of thousands of Palestinian public sector employees to survive on little to no salaries for months on end, while Israel still maintains its revocation of work permits for the some 100,000 Palestinian laborers who used to work in Israel and in Israeli settlements before October 7.

According to Abudaka, “PA salaries account for around 30% of the West Bank’s total salaries, while workers in Israel generate around 40% of the West Bank’s total salaries, making these two sectors the backbone of the West Bank’s economy.”

Residents of the camp say that recent attacks by Israeli forces have taken on a terrifying dimension not seen before, one that amounts to a form of collective punishment, in which civilians and infrastructure have been targeted indiscriminately without red lines or limitations.

In April, at least 14 Palestinians were killed and scores more injured as Israeli forces laid siege to the camp for more than two days, leaving bodies in the streets and ambulances and medical teams unable to reach the wounded.

At least 80 residents of the camp have been killed since 7 October, according to the local popular committee. About 300 homes have been destroyed and at least 2,600 have been damaged. The camp has been raided 28 times.
