India has elected 74 women MPs to Lok Sabha this year, four fewer than in 2019 and 52 more than in Indiaβs first elections in 1952. These 74 women make just 13.63% of the elected strength of the Lower House, much less than the 33% that will be reserved for women after the next delimitation exercise.

Global Gender Gap, 2024
β Released by the World Economic Forum on 12 June, 2024
β Top 5 Countries: Iceland (1st) was followed by Finland (2nd), Norway (3rd), New Zealand (4th) and Sweden (5th)π.
β Globally, Sudan was ranked last on the index of 146 countries.
β India has slipped two places to the 129th position (127th last year).
β Within South Asia, India ranked 5th after Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan, with Pakistan ranked last (145th).
β Despite the drop, India showed strong gender parity in secondary education enrollment and political empowerment, securing the 10th position for the number of years with female/male π©βπΌπ¨βπΌ heads of state in the last 50 years.
β However, Indiaβs overall gender gap closure stands at 64.1 per cent in 2024, a slight decline from 64.2 per cent last year.

World Sickle Cell (WSC) Day 2024
β The mission entails awareness creation, universal screening of 7 crore people in the age group of 0-40 years in the affected tribal areas.
β The focus is on tribal dominated districts of 17 states with higher prevalence of the disease.
β The National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission is a sub mission of National Health Mission.

β Every year on June 19,WSC Day is observed.β Gov. of India embarked on the βMission for Elimination of SCD by 2047β, with PM Narendra Modi launching the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission from Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh on 1st July, 2023.
β The theme for 2024 is "Hope Through Progress: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Globally."

π113 Countries Have Never Had Female Heads Of State Or Govt
β In 1893, New Zealand became 1st country to grant voting rights to women, and 47 years later, in 1940 Khertek Anchimaa Toka of the Tuvan People's Republic became the 1st female head of state.
β Despite progress, 113 countries have never had a female head of state or government.
β Currently, only 26 countries are currently led by a woman.
β According to a UN Women's global data on Women Political Leaders 2024, female political leaders represent 23.3% of Cabinet members heading Ministries in 2024, a slight increase from 2023.
β Women are primarily leading portfolios related to women and gender equality, family and children affairs, social affairs, and indigenous and minority affairs.
β Male dominance extends to Permanent Missions to the UN, with women holding only 25% of Permanent Representative posts in New York, 35% in Geneva, and 33.5% in Vienna.
