#Turkey-#Syria earthquake: death toll has crossed 41,000 people

Highlights

Turkish authorities say 35,418 people have been killed in the country. The Syrian government and the UN say more than 5,800 people died in Syria.

Aid has begun trickling into northwestern Syria, nine days after the quakes, with a #UN convoy carrying humanitarian assistance passing through the Bab al-Salam crossing from Turkey.

The #WHO is describing the earthquakes in Turkey as the worst natural disaster in a century in what it characterises as its Europe region.

The UN is appealing for $397m in aid to help five million Syrian survivors with shelter, healthcare and food.

#Turkey presidential election will go to runoff as Erdogan performs better than expected

Turkey’s electoral chief said that the presidential race will go to a second round on May 28 as incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan fell just short of an outright victory.

Ahmet Yener, the head of Supreme Electoral Board, said Monday that even when the remaining 35,874 uncounted overseas votes were distributed, no one would secure the majority needed to win the elections outright.

Breaking: #Turkey's Erdogan to back #Sweden joining #Nato - Stoltenber

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has agreed to support Sweden's bid to join Nato, the military alliance's chief Jens Stoltenberg has said.

At a briefing, he said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan would forward Sweden's bid to the Turkish parliament and "ensure ratification".

Earlier, he had appeared to suggest Turkey would back Sweden if the EU re-opened membership talks with Ankara.

Turkey has criticized Sweden for hosting Kurdish militants.

Mr Stoltenberg was speaking in Vilnius after hosting talks between Mr Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Ulf Kristersson ahead of a Nato summit in the Lithuanian capital.

How did #Arab governments react to the #Al_Ahli hospital strike that killed more than 500 Palestinians

The primacy of the Palestinian cause had been gradually fading among a number of Arab governments, although it was still stirring deep emotion among their citizens.

The #UAE, #Bahrain and #Morocco - which all recently normalised relations with Israel - issued strong condemnations when news of the blast emerged.

President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi of #Egypt - the first Arab country to make peace with Israel - described it as a "clear violation of international law".

#SaudiArabia, which has itself been inching towards a normalisation deal, called it a heinous crime.

Deadly drone strikes claim lives in #Ethiopia's #Amhara Region, Sparking Mourning and Fear

In the aftermath of a lethal drone attack in Wegel Tena that claimed five civilian lives, mourning and fear have enveloped communities across Ethiopia's Amhara region. Hospital officials have confirmed the destruction of an ambulance, the tragic loss of its driver, and casualties among employees and civilians from a nearby construction site during the incident on November 30. Footage obtained by Al Jazeera shows the aftermath, with the ambulance destroyed, consistent with an aerial hit.

Experts accuse the Ethiopian government of engaging in collective punishment by failing to differentiate between fighters and non-combatants in its drone targeting. Yirga Gelaw, an Ethiopian academic, stated, "The drone strikes have increased dramatically in recent weeks, and almost all the strikes have targeted civilians."

Both the government and non-state Fano militias claim proximity to victory over the other, but the ongoing conflict appears poised to extend into 2024 as the government increasingly relies on its expanding drone arsenal, supplied by foreign partners such as the #UAE and #Turkey.

Observers denounce the deployment of armed drones against Ethiopian civilians as cruel and a violation of international law. They advocate for the protection of non-combatants and urge a pursuit of negotiated peace, rejecting a strictly military solution to halt the escalating hostilities and the humanitarian crisis gripping the Amhara region.

#Turkey signs oil and gas exploration deal with #Somalia

Turkey and Somalia signed an energy exploration and drilling deal on Thursday, further strengthening bilateral ties after concluding a defense agreement last month.

The deal targets #hydrocarbon reserves in its exclusive economic zone, which hasn’t been developed since the collapse of the Somali government in the early 1990s. It also includes land exploration.

The agreement was signed by Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar and Somali Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Abdirizak Omar Mohamed in Istanbul.

The move came after #Ethiopia signed an agreement in January that grants it naval and commercial access to ports along #Somaliland’s coast, in exchange for recognition of the breakaways region’s independence.

In response, Ankara signed a comprehensive naval defense deal with Somalia last month, which Mogadishu says mandates Turkey to defend Somali sea waters against terrorism, piracy and any external threat that could violate Somali state rights for the next 10 years.

The “historic” deal also reportedly empowers Turkey to develop Somalia’s maritime resources in its exclusive economic zone. https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/turkey-somalia-signs-oil-gas-exploration-deal
#Somalia says operation against Al-Shabab killed nearly 40 militants

The Somali government, alongside international partners, including countries providing airstrikes, executed a military operation against #al_Shabab militants in the #Lower_Shabelle region, resulting in the elimination of nearly 40 militants. Conducted by the Somali National Army, the operation targeted the villages of #Baldooska and #Baghdad, approximately 30 kilometers north of #Mogadishu. This move follows intelligence indicating militant mobilization for attacks against civilians in the area.

While al-Shabab media claimed civilian casualties, including children, the Somali government is investigating these reports. Ground and air operations, led by both Somali and international forces, have been ongoing since Monday, according to a regional official. Contrary to claims, the #United_States clarified that it did not conduct the recent strike, with the last recorded airstrike on 10March.

The operation underscores ongoing efforts to counter al-Shabab extremism, with support from partners like #Turkey and the United States. However, claims of civilian casualties warrant thorough investigation to ensure accountability and minimize collateral damage.

#Turkish local elections: Opposition stuns Erdogan with historic victory

#Turkey's main opposition party has claimed big election victories in the main cities of Istanbul and Ankara.

The results are a significant blow for Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had hoped to regain control of the cities less than a year after he claimed a third term as president.

He led the campaign to win in Istanbul, where he grew up and became mayor.

But Ekrem Imamoglu, who first won the city in 2019, scored a second victory for the secular opposition CHP.

Mr Erdogan had vowed a new era in Turkey's megacity of almost 16 million people, but the incumbent mayor of Istanbul was on course to win more than 50% of the vote, defeating the president's AK Party candidate by more than 11 points and almost one million votes.

This was also the first time since Mr Erdogan came to power 21 years ago that his party was defeated across the country at the ballot box.

#Turkey's first warship docks in #Mogadishu, marking defense deal

Turkey's first warship, the TCG Kınalıada F514 corvette, docked in Mogadishu, #Somalia, on Tuesday. The arrival marks the beginning of a 10-year defense and economic agreement signed between the two nations in February 2024.

Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended a welcome ceremony for the Turkish vessel. He emphasized the strategic cooperation, particularly in areas such as humanitarian aid, security, defense, and economic development. Mohamud expressed gratitude to Turkey, describing it as a friendly and trustworthy partner.

The maritime agreement comes amid tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia. This follows a memorandum of understanding signed by #Addis_Abeba and the #Somaliland administration, which claims independence from Somalia. Turkey constructed the Kınalıada F514 as part of its National Ship Project (MILGEM).

The 10-year deal, approved by Somalia's parliament and signed by the president, strengthens ties between the nations. It also includes plans for Turkish oil drilling in Somalia to capitalize on its untapped reserves.

#Turkey to build $6m #Somali embassy in #Ankara

Turkey is set to construct and donate an embassy building and a plot of land to Somalia at a cost estimated to reach over $6m, according to a deal submitted to the Turkish parliament on Monday.

As per the agreement signed between Turkey and Somalia in 2022, Ankara will make this contribution in exchange for a plot of land that the Somali government donated to Turkey in 2015.

#Turkey to send ship to search for oil and gas off #Somalia coast

Turkey will send an exploration vessel off the coast of Somalia later this year to search for oil and gas as part of a hydrocarbon cooperation deal between two countries, Turkish energy ministry said on Thursday.

"We will send our Oruc Reis vessel at the end of September, or early October to Somalia. It will conduct a significant seismic study there, which can last for months," Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said.

Two of the three blocks, were some 50 kilometres off the Somalia coast, Bayraktar also said, adding that the third one was some 100 km away.

"We think that Somalia has significant oil and natural gas resources offshore. We signed an offshore deal for three blocks. Turkey will have exclusive rights for search and production when we find oil in these areas," Bayraktar said.

#Op_ed: Critique of #Ethiopia's Macroeconomic Policy: A Comparative Analysis

Ethiopia’s recent decision to allow the birr (#ETB) to float freely against the US dollar (#USD) marks a significant shift in its economic strategy. In this op-ed, Batseba Kassahun, who holds a Master of Public Administration from New York University, examines this policy's implications and immediate impact.

The piece outlines the ETB's significant depreciation following the policy shift, noting the exchange rate movement from around 57 ETB to over 100 ETB per USD. The op-ed highlights the resulting inflationary pressures, with significant price increases in essential goods such as food staples and construction materials.

The op-ed further highlights the challenges of implementing this policy, including problematic government responses to inflation through price controls and business closures. The disparity between official and black-market exchange rates has incentivized hoarding and black-market transactions, with the black-market rate reaching 146 ETB per USD.

Comparing Ethiopia’s experience with other countries, the article discusses #Zimbabwe's hyperinflation, #Argentina's currency crises, #Turkey’s recent currency volatility, and #Ghana's managed float approach. These comparisons highlight the risks of Ethiopia's abrupt shift to a free-market policy and emphasize the importance of gradual implementation and supportive economic measures to mitigate adverse effects.
