Always attend your classes, regardless of the excuse, as you never know what valuable knowledge you might miss out on.

It was the 17th of Ramadan, the last day before Ramadan/Eid break. Many mashaykh and professors shifted the final week of classes online to facilitate ease for everyone.

This particular Shaykh was Dr. Ali Bāroom جزاه الله خيرا, a student of Shaykna Muhammad Ali Adam al-Ityubi رحمه الله & publisher/reviewer of the first editions of his Sharh Nasaa'i.

He did not offer such concession as a form of respect/reverence for knowledge. He reminds us often that ilm is not obtained through rest and ease, but only through dedication and hardship.

Now, as you all can imagine, somedays, fasting Ramadan in Makkah are quite difficult, especially when the temperature exceeds 100+. So, it being the last day before the break, plus around Dhuhr time, the thought came to miss the class.

Alhamdulillah, Allah granted me success to fight off the whispers and head to class. The university was empty, it looked like a ghost town, and only about 10 students showed up. But then something amazing happened...

The Shaykh shared a new insight, that caught me by surprise, and left me feeling grateful for attending. This experience was so impactful that I am still reflecting on it, even though it took place several weeks ago.

He brought up the famous matter of "the customs of the people of Madina" and how certain scholars use it as evidence. Following this, the Shaykh inquired about the customs of the people of Makkah. Do we have any knowledge of issues that relate to the customs of the people of Makkah? Was that even a thing?

The Shaykh then listed off a slew of issues.

From them: issues related to Hajj & Umrah, "...and the weight (to be used) is the weight of the people of Makkah", Imam ash-Shafi'ee's preference of Abu Mahdhurah's Adhan with the Tarji' (the repetition of some sentences) over the Adhan of Bilal (the one we are all familiar with) because it was the custom of Ahl-Makkah at the time.

Then the Shaykh mentioned a few examples of Imam ash-Shaafi'ee saying "this is the custom among us (i.e. the people of Makkah)" in "al-Umm".

And a few moments ago I stumbled upon another example in Imam Shafi'ee's "al-Umm". He stated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would pray the two Eids (outside of the masjid) in the open area. That was also the practice of those who came after and all of the other cities - *except the people of Makkah*. It did not reach us that any of the Salaf prayed Eid except in their Masjid.

Imam Shafi'ee said he thought the reason for this is due to al-Masjid al-Haram being the best place in this dunya. They didn't like to pray in any other place except in al-Masjid al-Haram as long as it was possible.

Alhamdulillah.

Mind you, this was a side benefit not related to the course, so it wouldn't have been repeated or found in the book we're studying.
As I reflect now, it was certainly a test from Allah. He granted me success to attend, then among the rewards was this absolute gem.

Moral of the story: When you have an opportunity to do a good deed and hesitations creep in, push them aside and take action. You won't regret it.

Make the khutbah (Friday Sermon) short and elongate the Salah!

Abu Waa’il said: ‘Ammaar addressed us and he spoke briefly but eloquently. When he came down (from the minbar), we said: O Abu’l-Yaqzaan, you spoke eloquently but briefly, would that you had made it longer. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) say:

*إن طول صلاة الرجل، وقصر خطبته، مئنة من فقهه، فأطيلوا الصلاة، وأقصروا الخطبة‏*

*“A man’s lengthening his prayer and shortening his khutbah is a sign of his understanding (of religion), so make your prayers lengthy and your khutbahs brief, for there is charm in eloquent speech.”* Narrated by Muslim (969).

Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

"As for making the khutbah short, it is a Sunnah to be followed. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined that and did it. According to the hadeeth of ‘Ammaar ibn Yaasir: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined making the khutbah short. And he used to give khutbahs with good words and few, and he disliked prattle and long-windedness.

The scholars disapprove of exhortations in which some is forgotten because of the length, and they like that in which the listener can focus on what is said and learns from it after memorizing it. That can only occur when the exhortation is brief." Al-Istidhkaar (2/363, 364).

An-Nawawi said, "It is mustahabb to keep the khutbah short, because of the hadeeth quoted above, and so that they do not get bored by it. Our companions said: Keeping it short should be done in moderation, and should not be taken to such extremes that (its benefit) is erased altogether." Al-Majmoo’ (4/358)

This past Friday, our beloved Shaykh Saalih al-Usaymi حفظه الله implemented this hadith in his Khutbah by making it only 12 minutes! Allahu Akbar! Where are the followers of the Sunnah?!

🌙 The sacred month of Dhul-Qa'dah ذو القعدة is here.

Let's take a moment to learn about this month together.

Dhul Qa'dah/Qi'dah is one of the four sacred months in the Islamic calendar (Dhul Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab being the other three). These months were also deemed to be sacred in the times of Jahiliyyah.

A reason why these months were chosen was to protect pilgrims traveling to Makkah and back for Hajj and Umrah.

Remember, in those days, it took weeks to travel to other countries so many departed in Dhul Qa'dah.

Dhul Hijjah is the actual month of Hajj. Pilgrims would head home afterwards or in the following month, Muharram. Rajab is in the middle of the year in which many people went to perform Umrah.

Dhul-Qa'dah ذو القعدة was given its name due to bandits sitting (قعود) on the roadways waiting to attack and kill pilgrims heading towards Makkah.

As a result, killings, fighting, wars and expeditions became prohibited during these months.

Also, the severity of performing sins during these months are magnified.

If the ignorant remained quiet, there would be no Fitna.

Al-Hāfidh Jamāl-Dīn Al-Mizzi رحمه الله said,

"If only the uninformed one remained quiet, he would relax himself, relieve burden from others, dwindle mistakes, and proliferate the truth."

I advise my brothers and sisters whenever you study a subject, give it your all the first go.

Memorize, summarize, make flow charts - do whatever helps you to cement the science/topic in your heart.

When it comes time to review, all you'll need is to dust off the engraving.

Just came across these notes I made from a while back and it was like I found a treasure chest, subhanallah.

Skilled in Reciting the Quran, but Lacking in Understanding.

Alhamdulillah, tonight marked the end of a 2-week intensive explanation of two poems in Tajweed: Tuhfah & Jazariyyah, explained by our Shaykh al-Muqri Abdur-Rahim Ieedy حفظه الله. The Shaykh granted us ijaazah of al-Jazariyyah.

Some individuals concentrate on mastering the recitation of the Quran, without dedicating the same level of focus and effort to comprehending its meaning & application through the correct process (i.e. viewing it through the perspectives of the Sahabah).

Consequently, they end up becoming misguided - but proficient reciters. They then use their recital, acts of worship, and achievements as proof for their guidance, but the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said about the Khawarij:

"...and a people will come with beautiful words and evil deeds. They will recite the Quran, but it will not pass beyond their throats. They will leave the religion as an arrow leaves its target, and they will not return to it as the arrow does not return to its bow. They are the worst of the creation..."

"...If anyone of (you compares his prayer with) their prayer, he will consider his prayer inferior to theirs, and similarly his fasting inferior to theirs, but they will desert Islam (go out of religion) as an arrow goes through the victim's body..."

This indicates that an individual's skill in their recital, acts of worship, and accomplishments do not dictate their adherence to the truth.

Our respected Sh. Abdur-Rahim consistently educates us on the Quran's meaning and emphasizes crucial Aqeedah principles.

For example, after explaining line 58: إلا ب(ويل) (هل) وأولى (ناضرة)

The Shaykh pointed out the difference between the words: ناضرة & ناظرة in Suratul Qiyaamah.

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَاضِرَةٌ * إِلَى رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ
"Some faces that Day shall be Nâdirah (shining and radiant). Looking at their Lord (Allah)."

Allah explicitly states that believers will look at their Lord. Hence, according to the Ahl-Sunnah, the believers will see their Lord on the Day of Judgement.

He then provided further supporting evidence from the Quran:

كَلاَّ إِنَّهُمْ عَنْ رَبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَمَحْجُوبُونَ

"Undoubtedly they (evil-doers) will be veiled from seeing their Lord that Day."

Being veiled from seeing Allah on the Day of Judgement is a punishment for them. From this verse, we also understand that there will be others who will rewarded by seeing Allah on that Day.

This may seem like a basic point in Aqeedah (creed), but its significance cannot be overstated. Aqeedah and Manhaj (methodology) form the foundation of all disciplines within Islam, for those with profound insight. When calling others to Allah, it is essential to highlight the correct interpretation of Islam whenever the opportunity presents itself.

It is said that the Salafi will instill within you the proper Aqeedah & Manhaj - even if they are teaching mathematics!

May Allah accept and grant us to success to recite, understand, & implement the Quran as it was revealed.
