BREAKING: In a dramatic escalation of East-West tensions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian nuclear forces put on high alert Sunday in response to what he called “aggressive statements” by leading NATO powers.

The order means Putin has ordered Russia’s nuclear weapons prepared for increased readiness to launch, raising the threat that the tensions could boil over into nuclear warfare. In giving it, the Russian leader also cited hard-hitting financial sanctions imposed by the West against Russia, including Putin himself.

Speaking at a meeting with his top officials, Putin directed the Russian defense minister and the chief of the military’s General Staff to put the nuclear deterrent forces in a “special regime of combat duty.”

BREAKING: AP: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will again extend the travel mask mandate for an additional two weeks to monitor uptick in COVID-19 cases.

The federal mandate to wear a mask on planes and public transportation was due to expire on April 18. It's been extended several times before, but pressure but pressure was mounting from the airline industry and others to do away with it now.

Critics of the mandate have seized on the fact that states have rolled back rules requiring masks in restaurants, stores and other indoor settings, and yet COVID-19 cases have fallen sharply since the omicron variant peaked in mid-January.

MAJOR BREAKING NEWS: The Supreme Court has voted to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, according to an initial draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito circulated inside the court and obtained by POLITICO.

The draft opinion is a full-throated, unflinching repudiation of the 1973 decision which guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights and a subsequent 1992 decision – Planned Parenthood v. Casey – that largely maintained the right. “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Alito writes.

Deliberations on controversial cases have in the past been fluid. Justices can and sometimes do change their votes as draft opinions circulate and major decisions can be subject to multiple drafts and vote-trading, sometimes until just days before a decision is unveiled. The court’s holding will not be final until it is published, likely in the next two months.

BREAKING: ABORTION OVERTURNED: In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating the constitutional right to an abortion. The authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representative.

The decision, a draft of which was leaked in late April, essentially overturns the landmark 1973 ruling in Roe v Wade that federally legalized abortion. Now, the decision on whether or not abortion is legal returns to the states.
