The Oedipus Complex is a concept introduced by Sigmund Freud as part of his theory of psychosexual development. Named after the tragic figure from Greek mythology, Oedipus, who unknowingly killed his father and married his mother, the complex describes a child’s unconscious desire for the opposite-sex parent and feelings of rivalry or hostility towards the same-sex parent. Freud believed this stage occurs in children between the ages of 3 and 6, during what he termed the “phallic stage” of development.

For boys, the Oedipus Complex involves feelings of desire for their mother and jealousy towards their father, whom they view as a competitor for their mother’s attention and affection. Freud argued that these feelings are typically resolved through a process called “identification,” where the child adopts the characteristics and values of the same-sex parent, helping shape their gender identity and superego.

Freud also introduced the concept of the Electra Complex as the female counterpart, though he gave it less emphasis. In girls, this complex is marked by feelings of desire for the father and rivalry with the mother.

While Freud’s theories, including the Oedipus Complex, have been highly influential in the development of psychoanalysis and understanding human behavior, they have also been criticized for lacking empirical support and being overly focused on sexual motivations. Today, the Oedipus Complex is viewed more as a metaphor for family dynamics and early childhood attachment rather than a strict developmental stage. Despite the controversies, it remains one of the most widely known concepts in Freudian psychology and has had a lasting impact on both psychology and popular culture.

Oidipus Kompleksi, Sigmund Freud tarafından öne sürülen ve psikoseksüel gelişim teorisinin bir parçası olan bir kavramdır. Adını Yunan mitolojisindeki trajik bir karakter olan Oidipus’tan alır; Oidipus, bilmeden babasını öldürüp annesiyle evlenmiştir. Kompleks, bir çocuğun karşı cinsten ebeveyne yönelik bilinçdışı arzularını ve aynı cinsten ebeveyne karşı rekabet veya düşmanlık duygularını tanımlar. Freud, bu evrenin 3 ile 6 yaşları arasındaki çocuklarda, “fallik dönem” olarak adlandırdığı gelişim aşamasında ortaya çıktığını savunur.

Ancak bu teoriler, yeterli deneysel desteğe sahip olmamak ve aşırı cinsel motivasyonlara odaklanmakla eleştirilmiştir.
