#BurkinaFaso's president Roch Marc Christian Kabore has declared three days of national mourning from Thursday after suspected jihadists killed 47 people, including 30 civilians, in the latest attack in the north of the country.

The assault on Wednesday near the northern town of #Gorgadji left 14 soldiers and three militia volunteers dead, as well as the 30 civilians, the communications ministry said.

The soldiers and militia had been "guarding civilians setting off for #Arbinda," another town in northern Burkina.
In an ensuing gunbattle, security forces killed 58 "terrorists" and put the rest to flight, according to the government. Nineteen people were also wounded, it said.
Rescue and relief operations are continuing.

The area is in the notorious "three-border" zone where Burkina Faso meets Mali and Niger, a focus of the jihadist violence in the wider #Sahel region of west Africa.

It was the third major attack on Burkinabe soldiers in the past two weeks.

#Chad says will withdraw half its troops from the G5 #Sahel force, in order to better adapt to the organisation of rebel groups in the region.

Chad says it will recall 600 soldiers, half its contingent, from the multinational G5 Sahel forces in the troubled three-border region of #Mali, #Niger and #BurkinaFaso, where a surge in violence has cost thousands of lives.

โ€œThis is a strategic redeployment to better adapt to the organisation of the terrorists,โ€ spokesman Abderaman Koulamallah told the reporters on Saturday.

โ€œThat still leaves around 600 soldiers on the ground,โ€ said Koulamallah. The redeployment had been planned for some time and in cooperation with the G5โ€™s leadership, he said. โ€œRegarding the situation on the ground, we need a mobile force, hence the withdrawal of some of our forces with heavy weapons,โ€ he said.

Chadโ€™s commitment to fighting the rebels remained intact, insisted Koulamallah.
#BurkinaFaso's former president Blaise Compaore, the main accused in a long-awaited trial on the 1987 assassination of his predecessor Thomas Sankara, will boycott the upcoming proceedings, his lawyers said on Thursday.

"President Blaise Compaore will not be attending the political trial that is being staged against him at the military court of Ouagadougou, nor will we," Burkinabe and French attorneys for Compaore said.
In the trial opening on Monday, Compaore and 13 others face an array of charges in the death of Sankara.

#Sankara took power in the impoverished #Sahel state in 1983, renaming the country the following year from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, which means "land of the honest men."
He carried out a string of radical policies, including nationalisations, public housing and a ban on female genital mutilation, polygamy and forced marriages.
But he was shot dead on October 15, 1987, aged just 37, during a putsch led by Compaore, a former friend.

#EU The European Union on Friday imposed sanctions on five senior members of #Maliโ€™s ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฑ transitional government, including Prime Minister Choguel #Maรฏga, accusing them of working to obstruct and undermine the transition from military to civilian rule.

The move comes days after Mali coup leaders ordered #Franceโ€™s ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท ambassador to leave in what was the latest episode in a growing diplomatic crisis between the impoverished #Sahel region country, its African neighbors and European partners. But the sanctions werenโ€™t linked to the expulsion.

Others hit by the EUโ€™s asset freezes and travel bans include members of the inner circle of Col. Assimi #Goita, who put himself in charge last year after dismissing the civilian leaders of Maliโ€™s transitional government. EU citizens and companies are forbidden to grant the five access to funds.
