Deep-sea fish have a new addition: in Monterey Canyon off the coast of California, a new adorable snailfish has been discovered — the Bumpy Snailfish.
It was spotted at a depth of approximately 3,268 meters with the help of a remotely operated underwater vehicle from the MBARI oceanographic institute: its small translucent body, soft contours, and bumpy "skin" make it look like a gelatinous alien.
Snailfish thrive under crushing pressure, where there's no light and almost no food, and the Bumpy Snailfish has become yet another proof of how far life has squeezed into the darkest crevices of the ocean.

🌑 Footage of Mars surface from HiRISE images — like flying over a hellish wasteland!
The camera on the MRO orbiter has taken 100,000+ super-resolution photos since 2006. These were used to create 3D models: canyons, dunes, craters come alive in a flight over Syrtis Major — dark sand dunes and mesas in dust storms.
No atmosphere — rocks hit directly, leaving scars.

This is what your brain looks like when you're learning something new. At this moment, neural connections are actively restructuring, which creates an almost physical sensation of discomfort.
Every attempt to master a new skill is the strengthening of some neural connections and the disconnection of others that are no longer needed. Simply put, the brain breaks down the old pattern and builds a new one. It's unpleasant, but that's exactly how the upgrade happens.

A massive tunnel boring machine literally gnaws through solid rock, carving a path through stone depths. These steel monsters, weighing up to several thousand tons, can advance dozens of meters per day, leaving behind finished tunnels.

🌵 Grid against the desert: brilliantly simple
The essence of the method: a system of barriers in the form of a grid is created on the sand, which slows down wind erosion and helps accumulate moisture. Plants in such "cells" take root many times better, gradually turning dead land into green oases.

❄ This is avalanche control — special cannons fire at mountain slopes to trigger a controlled snow slide. It's better to cause a small, safe avalanche now than to deal with the aftermath of a large one later that could bury the resort along with vacationers.
