As part of the J-1 Work and Travel Program, you must adhere to U.S. tax laws and file your returns by April 15. Here are the key consequences of missing this deadline:

Late Filing Penalties: The IRS will charge 5% of unpaid taxes per month, up to 25%, for late filing.
Late Payment Penalties: If taxes are due and not paid by April 15, you'll incur a penalty of 0.5% per month, up to 25%, plus interest.
State Penalties: Similar charges apply at the state level depending on local tax laws.
Visa Implications: Non-compliance can affect your future visa applications.
Social Security and Medicare: Eligibility might be impacted if you don't file.
Delayed Refunds: You won’t receive any tax refunds until you file, and filing too late could mean losing the refund entirely.
