This Serbian expression is all about honor. When your cheek is clean, it means you’ve kept your honor intact , you didn’t snitch, you didn’t break, you stayed solid.
I first heard it after I was arrested in Serbia. I spent three months in jail, getting interrogated constantly about who my contacts were and who was helping me with visas. As my Serbian comrades can confirm — not a single name left my mouth. I kept the code of silence. The same “Omertà” the Italians talk about.
When I finally got out and met up with some associates, one older Serbian guy who had been arranging to smuggle me back into the country pulled me aside and said:
“Usually I wouldn’t help an American… but you kept your cheek clean.”
