Ships and airplanes go all the way around the earth. So we know that the earthisround. Itis shaped like a ball.
The balls you play with are about ten or twenty inches around. But the earth is 25,000 miles around.
Think of a ball as large as that!

The Sky at Night
It was Jim's bedtime, and Mother went into his room to say good-night.
Jim was looking out the window.
"My! How bright the sky looks!" he said.
"Yes," said his mother. "The sky looks bright tonight because we see so many stars."
Mother and Jim looked at the moon and stars a little while longer.
Soon Mother saw that Jim's eyes were almost shut.
So she said good-night to him and turned out the light.
But Jim was not in the dark.
The big round moon was shining on his bed.
