The US embassy in Canberra was approached for comment about whether it had begun to collect any data on migrant crime, as per the administration’s request.

Former Immigration Department deputy secretary Abul Rizvi said data on migrant crime was already publicly available through the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Australian Crime Commission, and that he had seen nothing to suggest that crime was more prevalent among people born overseas compared to people born in Australia.

“This is just typical, bizarre stuff from the Trump administration,” said Rizvi, noting that data out of the US had also failed to show a correlation between a larger migrant population and rising crime rates.

Australia admits about 185,000 immigrants a year, most of whom are skilled workers. Net overseas migration hit a post-pandemic high of 536,000 in 2022-23, but is projected to fall to 260,000 this financial year, according to Treasury.

The Australian government allocates about 20,000 humanitarian visas each year for asylum seekers. The most recent parliamentary enquiry into the issue of migrant crime in 2017, based on ethnic community gangs in Victoria, found the vast majority of Victorian offenders were Australian-born.

2021 census data found that migrants generally experienced about half the rate of violent crimes, such as physical assault, as the Australian-born population.

Rizvi said Australia’s stringent character tests and lack of land borders were a strong safeguard against migrant crime.

“Because of the nature of the [US] land border, the opportunity to conduct those tests is less available than in Australia,” he added.
