Senior Game VFX Artist (15 YOE) seeking opportunities in Australia/NZ. Any advice on studios or visa sponsorship?

Body: Hi r/vfx

I hope you're all doing well.

I am currently based in mainland China and serve as a Senior Game Visual Effects Artist with 15 years of industry experience. I have contributed to the development of numerous large-scale online games and mobile role-playing games, demonstrating proficiency in engines and tools including Unity, Unreal Engine 5, and Houdini.

I am seriously planning to relocate to Australia or New Zealand for the next chapter of my career and life.

I understand that the current market is tough and securing a work visa sponsorship is a significant hurdle. However, given my seniority and extensive production pipeline experience, I am hoping to find a studio where my skills could add immediate value.

I would really appreciate some guidance from locals or expats who have made the move:

Studios: Are there specific game studios in Aus/NZ known for hiring international senior talent? (I know of Weta and Ubisoft, but are there others I should look at?)

Job Boards: Aside from LinkedIn and ArtStation, are there any local industry job boards specific to the ANZ region?

Market Reality: For those working in Aus/NZ, how is the demand for Senior VFX Artists right now?

Thank you so much for your time and advice!

Harry Potter Apparation Effect

I was wondering how one would go about achieving the harry potter apparation disapparation effect from Harry Potter. I saw a few videos on youtube but none of them feel similar at all

does anyone know of any resources I could use to guide me in the right direction for this??

I am pretty program agnostic at this point so either AE or Nuke even Fusion related resources are fine I just need to understand the process

I know it has to do with getting a clean plate, isolating your subject and then doing something with the subject but I don’t understand how to get that sort of consistency that the movies show

any help would be appreciated

Anyone work on the "Wizard of Oz" for the Sphere in Las Vegas? What was your experience like?

I just saw it this past week while attending CES. Overall, it was a lot of fun. The tornado sequence was legitimately one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

I've seen some discussion about the making of this and my understanding is that it was a pretty difficult project and I can see why. Trying to extend out an 86 year old film to fit such a large and odd aspect ratio is kinda an insane undertaking.

I always found myself examining the extended areas to see how it was being animated. Sometimes it looked absolutely seamless but there were some times I did notice some subtle odd motion. I don't think anyone would've noticed if not looking for it though. Overall, I was pretty impressed with what the artists were able to pull off. It was a really fun experience and really interesting to see more of the world in the extended areas. I also thought that the transition sequences worked really well and were fun to watch.

It would be cool to see a narrative film shot specifically for the Sphere. Maybe an epic sci fi that could really make good use of the full screen in some interesting ways. I think the tornado sequence in The Wizard of Oz is a great example of how to utilize a screen like that.

Roto/comp artists: where do tracking tools fall apart the hardest?

Hey r/vfx,

Curious how others experience this in real production work.

In roto/comp tasks, I keep seeing automation work until occlusion, motion blur, or overlapping elements show up — then it’s a lot of manual cleanup and babysitting.

For people doing this regularly:
• What situations cause the most pain or rework?
• Does tracking usually save you time overall, or just move where the work happens?
• What kinds of failures are the most annoying to fix?

Interested in hearing real-world experiences rather than demo-perfect cases.

Makin the switch end of year... Which linux is best for VFX?

Friend! This year I'm saving up for a new computer, and seeing as Windows 11 is trash at best, I'm finally taking the plunge into Linux land. I figure if I only install it on my new computer, it'll force me to finally just deal with the learning curve, and I'll keep my old computer ready to go for any emergencies during the transition period. That said, anyone have any suggestions for a middle ground between new linux user, and linux os capable of minimal fuckery to get VFX apps working?

I primarily use: Houdini, Blender, Davinci Resolve, Blackmagic Fusion, Affinity suite (fuck adobeeeee, premiere/AE when client requests it (ewwwww), Parsec when traveling, and occasionally other bits and bobs like Embergen.

Any thoughts on where to start my research?

Roto - After Effects Rotobrush vs. Mocha Object Brush

I tend to use Rotobrush for a lot of my roto needs. It works very well for the kind of work I do.

I have Mocha Pro 2024 and am tempted to upgrade to 2025/2026 to take advantage of the Object Brush / Matte Assist ML tools. I'm curious if anyone has firsthand experience with those newer Mocha tools and if they are better/faster for "automatic" roto than AE's rotobrush.

thx!

Using Wacom Intuos 3 and Huiion Kamvas Pro 16 in Windows 10?

Hi

So i have a Wacom Intuos 3 and a Huion Kamvas Pro 16. I will like to alternate the use of both tablets, some days the Wacom (for nuke) and some the Huion(blender).

The other day i tried and uninstall the wacom, then installed the Huion and everything went fine, then when i installed back the wacom and unchek "windows ink" the mouse cursor disappear and then, whith the help of ChatGPT, i get the cursor back.

Anyways, anyone using a display and a normal tablet in windows 10?

Thanks

Boris FX Silhouette crashes 50 times a day

Hello Everybody,

yesterday I subscribed to Boris FX Silhouette and now I'm on my second day working with it.

What a nightmare.

I do not read very much about the instability of the software on the internet. What is happening here? Am I the only one having these problems?

Case where the software crashes:

selecting and using the IK tool - instant crash
using the ML nodes: sooner or later crashes
using the estimate color node - crash

also a LOT of random crashes that I can not reproduce.

What is this? I need to do shitloads of rotoscoping and was hoping to get it done with this software faster.

System Specs:

Win11

Ryzen 7950X

128GB Ram

RTX4080Super +RTX3080 with latest Studio drivers
All SSD

Any help is highly appreciated
