📑🖊 OPINION | What July 5th Taught Me That July 4th Never Did

Michelle Ellner, a Venezuelan-American activist and CODEPINK campaigner, reflects on what July 5th in Venezuela taught her that July 4th in the U.S. never did.

While the U.S. commemorates its independence with celebrations, Venezuela’s July 5 marks an ongoing struggle for sovereignty — one met with sanctions, asset freezes, and foreign interference.

Ellner recalls the 2002 U.S.-backed coup against Chávez and a broader campaign of economic warfare that continues under Nicolás Maduro. “True independence,” she writes, “is the right to choose your own path without being punished for it.”
