390BC: "Woe to the conquered" - Gauls butcher Rome, a day the Romans swear to avenge

Long before Rome was an Empire, the defeated Romans had capitulated to the Gauls under Brennus.
A thousand pounds weight of gold were to be their ransom. When it was about to be weighed out, the Gauls brought false weights. On this the Roman officer refused to use them, whereupon Brennus threw his sword into the scale, and exclaimed "Væ victis!" "Woe to the conquered!" The expression afterwards became proverbial, as signifying that no mercy was to be expected.

"...because they would not surrender, but drove them back when they assaulted it. For this reason they [the Gauls] wreaked their vengeance on the city [of Rome]" (Plutarch)

"This humiliation was great enough as it was, but it was aggravated by the despicable meanness of the Gauls, who produced unjust weights, and when the tribune protested, the insolent Gaul threw his sword into the scale." (Livy)

Marching Song of the Wolf Hundred Don Cossacks fighting against the Bolsheviks. Written by G. Morozov (1919), dedicated by Ataman Shkuro.

[Translated]
That's not the wind in the field blowing,
It's not a oak tree that makes noise.
Shkuro Wolf hundred is coming,
Mother Earth trembles beneath her.

Trumpet, "wolves" your cry is combative,
All hundred people are marching,
Always ahead of our hero on horseback,
His soul fear does not know.

That's not the thunder in the sky clear,
That's not lightning glistening -
In a dangerous firefight
From Shkuro the order flies:

"Come on, heroes, get behind me!
The day of the holy truth comes;
For these rapists the hour is fatal,
Our whip walks on the reptiles."

That's not a month that shines clear,
It's not the starlet that shines,
That folk moan is terrible
The Cossack's chest is pinching.

Joy to you Cossacks, fighters for truth!
Don't give mercy to the enemy,
Hurry to Moscow...

By finishing the job... Banner Wolves
...on the walls of the Kremlin put it."

The Order of the Don Ataman, in exile, Lieut. General M.N. Grabbe, June 28, 1941:

"And can we forget the friendly assistance that the German Army rendered us in the struggle we waged? All the Cossacks who took part in the struggle preferred to leave their homeland in 1920, go to a foreign land, where an unknown future, hardships and difficulties awaited them. The Don army did not obey the invaders... By the very existence of each Cossack in a foreign land, it affirmed the ideological struggle against communism and the Bolsheviks, waiting for that cherished moment when the red flags blow and fall from the Kremlin occupied by enemies... And now, at last, the hour, so long-awaited, has struck. The banner of the armed struggle against communism, against the Bolsheviks, and against the Soviet Union has been raised. This banner was raised by a powerful people, at who's strength the world today is amazed."

Helmuth von Pannwitz, awards the Iron Cross [2nd class] to Colonel I.N. Kononov (1943).

"Soviet Paradise" - RT Short Documentary

"For me it's neither paradise nor hell. It's one of the best places in Moscow that calls for profound attention and work to restore it. That doesn't mean restoring elements of a certain regime, but something created by the best artists and sculptors of our country." (Sergey Sobyanin, Moscow's Mayor)

"There was a substitution. One religion substituted another. But the new one was purely pagan."

The Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNKh complex) is considered by many the best park in Moscow. The chief architect was Vyacheslav Oltarzesky, he wanted a statue to Stalin to be the focal point. In 1938 he was arrested by the Soviet government and imprisoned. The documentary shows parts of the restoration effort as a tribute to the sculptors, architects and artists of the time.
