"We expected that by the onset of winter, Moscow would fall and Bolshevism would end. A very successful initiative was undertaken—though for some reason it was canceled by the main command—namely, General Mamontov's raid, which gathered several cavalry divisions and, having crossed the Red Front, was moving in the direction of Moscow. I can't quite understand why, but I think that among General Denikin's surroundings there were also Red agents who recalled parts of General Mamontov's forces, leading him to cross back over the Red Front and return. It would have been different if, instead of Denikin, our army had been commanded at that time by General Wrangel.

So, after Shchigry, we continued our movement northward, closer to Moscow, and without any fighting, occupied the town of Livny. In Livny, we stopped to rest, feed the horses, and push forward, as we thought, towards Moscow. Unfortunately, this did not come to pass."

Erasht Nikolaevich Giahintov, head of the mounted reconnaissance team of the 2nd Division of the Markov Artillery Brigade, "Notes of a White Officer."
