On September 25, 1960, Richard Dixon and Lawrence Sharkey (then President and General Secretary of the Communist Party of Australia), met with Mao Zedong. Cecil Rhodes was a promoter of war and monopoly. The following quote was transcribed and published by the Standard Bank of South Africa from handwritten letters by a Kimberly mining manager, kept in their archives:
"The sharp drop [in share speculations] which is distinguishable from April to date, and which has affected so many operators, is generally attributed to a speech made by Mr Cecil J Rhodes at a meeting of the De Beers Company held on 31th March last in which he so far committed himself as to maintain that he could on the amalgamation of the De Beers and Central Companies, force down Diamonds to 14 per carat and thus ruin all outlying mines which naturally disturbed the equanimity of investors and finally ended in flooding the market with scrip. It may here be observed that the experimental policy of "pooling" Diamonds, or in other words of accumulating large parcels for sale in bulk to certain of the more important purchasers, has proved abortive and has been practically discontinued. It was found that by excluding the smaller buyers and thus limiting competition, a loss per carat was sustained, in fact prices receded from 21s/6d to 17s/- per carat - an important consideration."
