Бомбейський феномен🧬

Усі ми знаємо про існування чотирьох груп крові — це обумовлено антигенами. Так, у другій групі міститься антиген А, в третій — В, у четвертій містяться і А, і В, а в першій групі ці елементи відсутні. Проте в ній є антиген Н — це речовина, яка бере участь у будівництві інших антигенів. Але трапляються мутації, які вносять свої корективи. Вони здатні впливати на групи крові та її склад. Одна з таких мутацій — бомбейський феномен. Вона зустрічається вкрай рідко — до 1 випадку на десять мільйонів осіб. Феномен отримав свою назву від індійського міста Бомбей — поселення, де у людей досить часто зустрічається «химерна» група крові.

Основний процес, який обумовлює бомбейський феномен та «химерну» кров — рецесивний епістаз. Цей тип успадкування відрізняється тим, що один ген пригнічує дію іншого, навіть якщо алель домінантний. В такому випадку мутаційний ген пригнічує синтез аглютиногенів, тому звичні аналізи крові можуть показати першу групу, хоча це не так.

Людям з цією мутацією можна переливати тільки кров з бомбейським феноменом, інакше — розвинеться гемоліз, що призведе до фатальних наслідків. Ось такі таємниці приховує наша кров!

Imagine being locked in your own body: you can hear, see, and understand everything clearly, but you can't move, talk, and even swallow. Scared? Well, there are people in the world who have experienced this firsthand.
 
The syndrome, known as "Locked-In Syndrome," is a rare but highly dreaded neurological condition. Patients with this syndrome have a paralyzed body and are unable to move or express emotions. However, they retain their consciousness, cognitive functions, and sensory perception. The only muscles that are not paralyzed are the eye muscles, so the only method of communication is through eye movements (typically vertical) or blinking.
 
The disease has a multifactorial nature and can be caused by severe organic brain stem lesions resulting in irreversibility and involve the destruction of nerve fibers and conduction pathways. Locked-In Syndrome can result from conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injuries, infections, tumors, nerve inflammation, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and many others.
 
You may wonder how doctors differentiate between Locked-In Syndrome and a coma. To determine this, doctors rely on various tests, including brain CT scans, EEG (electroencephalogram), and PET (positron emission tomography) scans. These tests help identify any brain hemorrhages, infarctions, or tumors in the corresponding brain regions, detect reactive bioelectrical rhythms, and visualize the metabolic activity of brain tissue. Based on these results, the doctor can diagnose the condition.
 
In reality, there have been relatively relatively few recorded cases of Locked-In Syndrome, so the likelihood of it happening to you is very rare. However, it's important to take care of your health to minimize the risk of developing diseases that could potentially lead to Locked-In Syndrome.

Brain stem lesions — abnormalities or damage that occur in the brain stem, which is the lower part of the brain connecting the spinal cord to the rest of the brain.

To differentiate — to show or find the difference between things that are compared.
To detect — to discover something, usually using special equipment.
To lead to — to cause or result in a particular outcome or consequence.
