Most beginners directly start reading books.
But UPSC preparation should not start randomly.
Before preparation, you need “preparation before preparation.”

Not a random screenshot.
Not a coaching summary.
Not a Random PDF.
Download it from the UPSC website 👇 and keep it saved.

But you won’t know whether it is relevant for the exam or not.
In UPSC, more reading is not always better.
Relevant reading + revision matters more

Second, keep PYQs with you from the beginning.
Syllabus tells you what UPSC can ask.
PYQs tell you how UPSC actually asks.

Don’t wait for syllabus to be complete to see PYQs.
If you study Fundamental Rights, check PYQs from
Fundamental Rights.


If you study agriculture, check PYQs from agriculture.
Study + PYQ mapping should start from the beginning

Third, finalise your booklist.
Watch topper videos.
Talk to seniors.
Go to bookshop see, the books yourself.
See whether the language and style suit you.
Take 2–3 weeks.
But after finalising, stick to limited sources.

One big mistake freshers make:
Today follow one topper books recommendation.
Tomorrow on another topper's suggestion choose another book.
Then they keep changing sources.
UPSC is not cleared by collecting books.
It is cleared by revising limited sources multiple times

One major doubt every beginner has:
Should I join coaching or not?
Coaching is neither bad, nor is it a guarantee of success.
Decide based on your past study methods
And whether you can be self discipline, have clarity, or
Whether you need external structure, to guide you

If you are joining coaching, remember this:
Coaching can give direction, structure, and basic clarity.
But coaching alone cannot clear UPSC for you.
It cannot do your revision, PYQ analysis,
answer writing, or self-study.

Many students attend class, discuss the topic with friends,
return to PG/flat, and feel they studied enough.
But attending lecture, is not equal to preparation.
After class, the real work starts.
Revision.

If you are not joining coaching, preparation is still possible.
But you need more discipline and structure.
Make a monthly plan.
Make weekly targets.
Keep daily revision slots.
And don’t run behind too many resources
