Facts For Prelims
Black Box Problem
▪︎In computing, a ‘black box’ is a device, system or program that allows you to see the input and output, but gives no view of the processes and workings between.
▪︎The AI black box, then, refers to the fact that with most AI-based tools, we don’t know how they do what they do.
▪︎In other words, we know the question or data the AI tool starts with (the input). For example, photos of birds. We also know the answer it produces (the output). For example, labelling the pictures of birds as ‘birds’. But thanks to the AI black box problem, we have no idea how the tool turned the input into the output. Which is fine, until it produces an unexpected, incorrect, or problematic answer.

Facts For Mains - Research & Development
●According to Economic Survey 2020-21, India's gross expenditure on R&D is 0.65% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), significantly lower than 1.5-3% of GDP spent by the top 10 economies.
●Though India ranked 48th among 131 innovating countries in Global Innovation Index (GII) 2020, a huge leap from 81st in 2015, there is a need for businesses to contribute more to the sector. “India’s business sector needs to rise to the occasion and significantly ramp
up its gross expenditure on R&D to a level commensurate to India’s status
as the fifth largest economy. This requires boosting business sector contribution to total GERD from 37% currently, to close to 68% — the
average business contribution in GERD of other top 10 economies.
● Indian residents’ share in total patents filed was 36%, compared with an average of 62% in other large economies. “India must focus on improving its performance on institutions and business sophistication innovation inputs. These are expected to result in higher improvement in innovation output,” the Survey added.

WHAT IS MULTIMODAL AI ?
Multimodal AI is a type of AI that combines multiple types or modes of data to create more accurate determinations, draw insightful conclusions, or make more precise predictions about real-world problems.
Multimodal AI systems train with and use video, audio, speech, images, text, and a range of traditional numerical data sets.
Multimodal AI differs from traditional single modal AI in that it is designed to work with multiple sources or types of data.
Multimodal AI applications:
o Computer vision - to analyze images and videos, enabling machines to recognize objects, people, and other visual elements.
o Speech recognition - to analyze speech, enabling machines to understand spoken language and respond accordingly.
o To analyze text, enabling machines to understand written language and respond accordingly.
o To analyze medical images, patient data, and clinical notes to provide more accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.

Understand the difference between the 8 terms related to space
1) Satellite
- An object that orbits a celestial body, such as the Earth or the Moon
- Can be natural or artificial
- Used for communication, navigation, weather forecasting, and other applications
2) Spacecraft
- A generic word for any man-made vehicle intended to be put into space, whether that be a small probe sent to Mars or a large Space Shuttle with a crew of seven
- Used for spaceflight missions, observation, meteorology, navigation, exploration, and more
3) Space Vehicle
- A spacecraft that is used to transport crew or separate payload
4) Space Station
- A large orbiting crewed base for space operations
5) Spaceship
- A crewed and usually piloted vehicle intended for use in space
6) Space Shuttle
- A spaceship designed for taking things to space and returning them to Earth
- Composed of an external tank, two solid rocket boosters, and an orbiter
7) Launch Vehicle
- A rocket-powered vehicle designed to carry a payload (a crewed spacecraft or satellites) from Earth's surface or lower atmosphere to outer space
8) Rockets
- An engine used to create thrust
- Used for launching spacecraft into space
