Balkrishna Doshi, an acclaimed Indian architect, and a 2018 Pritzker Prize winner passed away at the age of 95 on Jan 24, 2023.
Balkrishna Doshi has worked with two highly prominent masters of world architecture in the course of his career: Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn. He was known for his contributions to architecture in India and his ability to blend traditional Indian architectural principles with modern design. He designed over 100 buildings throughout his career, many of which have become iconic landmarks in India.
One of his most famous projects is the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, which was completed in 1974. The campus is known for its use of traditional Indian design elements, such as courtyards and open spaces, and its integration with the surrounding landscape.
Another notable project is the Aranya Low Cost Housing in Indore, which was completed in 1989. The housing development was designed to provide affordable housing for low-income residents, and it has been praised for its innovative design solutions, such as the use of hollow brick walls to reduce the need for air conditioning.
Doshi also designed the Sangath architecture office in Ahmedabad, which was completed in 1980. The building is known for its use of natural light and ventilation, and its integration with the surrounding landscape. It has been widely recognized as an example of sustainable design.
In addition to his architectural projects, Doshi was also an educator and a mentor to many young architects. He was the founder of the School of Planning at CEPT University in Ahmedabad, which has produced many notable architects in India.
Doshi's work has been recognized with many awards, including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, two of India's highest civilian honors. In 2018, he became the first Indian architect to receive the Pritzker Prize, considered the highest honor in architecture.
Doshi's passing is a great loss to the architecture community. His contributions to architecture in India and his ability to blend traditional and modern design principles will continue to inspire architects for many years to come.
