Film synopsis:
United Nations, 1960: the Global South ignites a political earthquake, jazz musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach crash the Security Council, Nikita Khrushchev bangs his shoe, and the U.S. State Department swings into action, sending jazz ambassador Louis Armstrong to Congo to deflect attention from the CIA-backed coup. Director Johan Grimonprez captures the moment when African politics and American jazz collided in this magnificent essay film, a riveting historical rollercoaster that illuminates the political machinations behind the 1961 assassination of Congo's leader Patrice Lumumba. Richly illustrated by eyewitness accounts, official government memos, testimonies from mercenaries and CIA operatives, speeches from Lumumba himself, and a veritable canon of jazz icons, Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat interrogates colonial history to tell an urgent and timely story of precedent that resonates more than ever in today's geopolitical climate.

Ulrike Stark festively invites you to our Sofa Social Easter Special. On the 12th of April, starting at 12:00, we will host two cracking workshops simultaneously: egg wax decoration and chocolate moulding. Yolky folky will get to paint eggs with the pysanky technique, using beeswax, a stylus, and dye to transform shells into beautiful art pieces. For the cocoa curious, no need to search for the golden ticket, our chocolatier Marcus will show us how to create our own Easter bunnies. Looking forward and licking lips.

Under the dark and gloomy sky,
stumble out in the night to our atelier nearby.
For the sirens of the dance floor call,
all those who drink until they crawl.
Ulrike beckons those dressed best,
a prize bestowed upon the most bewildering guest.
The bar will quench throats dry as ash,
only in exchange for cold hard cash.
Welcome all, friends and freaks,
to Neustadt 2 where havoc wreaks.
And if the law shall come knocking,
ease we must our house’s rocking,
So shut the windows and lock the door,
before the witch behind the wall shrieks louder than a…war.

We have planned a very special event this month as part of the #8 midweek Uli Sofa Social. We are able to host the Salon Paula, a series of events organized by Montforter Zwischentöne. We welcome the graphic designer Thomas Gschussmann from the zurgams communications agency, who will report on his work as a designer. Warm invitation to this special event!
Tue., November 4, 2025
7:00 p.m
The graphic designer Thomas Gschossmann and his partner Jörg Ströhle created this year’s visual identity for the Montforter Zwischentöne. They came up with the image of the girl on the diving board. For Gschossmann, confidence is a blend of courage, risk-taking, and solid preparation. As art director of zurgams, he heads one of the most successful communication agencies in the Lake Constance region. He and his team have received numerous awards for their campaigns and design concepts—often witty, always full of surprises.
