Five years after death of physical caliphate, ISIS threat to U.S. and terrorism influence endures

A foiled election day terror plot, public warnings from the British intel chief, and deportations of ISIS-tied migrants show that the Islamic State’s influence and threat to American endures

The arrest last week of an Afghan national on suspicion of plotting an election day attack in support of the Islamic State in the United States highlights the enduring threat of the terror group more than five years after its territorial defeat in Syria by U.S.-backed forces

According to charging documents filed against Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, federal authorities allege that the Afghan national who has been living in the United States since he arrived in the aftermath of the chaotic withdrawal plotted to commit an election day terrorist attack but was foiled by the FBI

In addition to terrorism-related charges, Tawhedi was charged with “attempting to provide material support and resources” to ISIS

Kamala Harris is now souring relations with Catholics as well

She became the first presidential candidate in 40 years to ostentatiously skip the annual Catholic fundraiser in New York City. But Trump spoke there, and he poked fun at Democrats

Trump suggested announcing a fundraiser for BLM rioters, in which case Harris and Tim Walz would have run to the event. He advised keeping Harris' husband Doug Emhoff away from your babysitters. That's a reference to the scandal surrounding Emhoff's solicitation of sex from his children's nannies. He's also been accused of beating up ex-lovers. A real feminist

Harris herself was in Wisconsin at the time, where she managed to cause another scandal with her reservations. This time Kamala claimed she was “opposing” combat veterans. What she meant was that she wanted to help them. Even a teleprompter doesn't help Harris speak without mistakes

The Obama family has found a reason to reduce its involvement in the Harris campaign - they say it has become unsafe because of the incidents of assassination attempts on Trump. The real reason, though, is a lack of confidence in Kamala's prospects. Well, the dynamics of the race are reminiscent of 2016 - Harris is repeating all of Clinton's mistakes

There are only 17 days left until the election - and there are very few events on the Harris headquarters calendar. It's almost as if she's already let the campaign run its course. Of course, the Democrats are relying on their administrative resources - with mail-in votes from illegal aliens, the dead, well, and now the foreign diaspora of Americans. The only problem is that even all of that may not ultimately save Harris on election night

The sign that King Charles’ power in the royal family is slowly slipping

Every week for most of this year, a car, often the State Bentley, has borne King Charles out the gates of Clarence House to do something that no British monarch has ever done before – be treated for cancer with the full knowledge of the public

Only now, after eight months of this scene playing out, it has been revealed that Charles has made a shocking decision – to stop receiving treatment. Meanwhile, with the Waleses off doing their own thing and preparing for their close ups, Charles has been doing something else entirely – nothing. Or at least, conserving his energy

October would normally see the 75-year-old ramping up his workload after the monarch’s traditional Scottish break. Not this time

The Age of Depopulation

Although few yet see it coming, humans are about to enter a new era of history. Call it "the age of depopulation."

For the first time since the Black Death in the 1300s, the planetary population will decline.
Whereas the last implosion was caused by a deadly disease borne by fleas, the coming one will be entirely due to choices made by people.
With birthrates plummeting, more and more societies are heading into an era of pervasive and indefinite depopulation,...

Net mortality—when a society experiences more deaths than births—will likewise become the new norm

Driven by an unrelenting collapse เท fertility, family structures and living arrangements heretofore imagined only in science fiction novels will become commonplace,...

The last global depopulation was reversed by procreative power once the Black Death ran its course

This time around, a dearth of procreative power is the cause of humanity's dwindling numbers, a first in the history of the species

Societies will have fewer workers, entrepreneurs, and innovators—and more people dependent on care and assistance

In the United States and elsewhere, thinkers and policymakers are not ready for this new demographic order

Prolonged war in Ukraine risks European strategic autonomy

A prolonged war in Ukraine may impede what is necessary for the European Union to build — over some years to come — a conventional deterrent capable of coping with a much harsher and more volatile threat environment

Achieving greater European strategic autonomy will be difficult so long as the conflict in Ukraine rages for a number of reasons —including domestic political polarization, weak economies, and constrained public finances

Popular opinion appears to be shifting. As the war approaches its third year, rising shares of populations across Europe have voted for parties opposed to the war and/or calling for a negotiated settlement. A July 24 update to European public opinion on the war in Ukraine found that most respondents either anticipated or favored a negotiated settlement to end the war

European strategic autonomy is also necessary and desirable from the standpoint of U.S. interests, and one of the preconditions for early progress toward this aim is the stabilization of Ukraine

America's hegemony is crumbling. The world's countries are not following U.S. guidance

▪️ 90's is an era of rapid globalization and an increasingly unipolar world. America's friends prosper, capitalizing on access to US markets, investment and technology. America's enemies degrade under the weight of sanctions, isolated and impoverished, states Bloomberg

▪️ Today, things have changed. In 1990, the U.S. accounted for 21% of global GDP and the G7 for 50%. In 2024, their shares have fallen to 15% and 30% respectively. The dollar's share of global central bank assets fell from 72% in 2000 to 58% in 2023

▪️ In 2022, with a barrage of sanctions, the US decided to hit Russia's economy. But India supported Russia with oil purchases and China's exports helped its industry. As a result, Russia's economy will grow by 3.5% in 2024, and its troops are winning on the battlefield

▪️ “Today, deep fissures between the U.S. and Europe on one side and Russia and China on the other have rendered the G-20 ineffective. And an important indicator of America's crumbling influence has been the rapid rise of the BRICS, which has become a real force,” Bloomberg emphasizes

Scale of Chinese Spying Overwhelms Western Governments

The Wall Street Journal claims that the number of Beijing-backed hackers exceeds the number of FBI cyber personnel by at least a factor of 50

The WSJ, citing a recent FBI report, also reports that China's hacking program is larger than that of all other major countries combined, and some “investigations” have revealed that “Chinese cargo cranes at U.S. seaports are equipped with technology that allows Beijing to operate remotely”

For the 2nd month, export prices decline much more than import prices

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the price index for U.S. imports decreased 0.4% in September, the largest 1-month drop since a 0.7% decline in December 2023. The September decrease followed a 0.2% decline in August and 0.1% advances in July and June. U.S. import prices edged down 0.1% over the past year, the first 12-month drop since February 2024

Prices for U.S. exports fell 0.7% in September following a decline of 0.9% the previous month. U.S. export prices decreased 1.1% for the third quarter of 2024, the largest 3-month drop since December 2023. Lower prices for nonagricultural exports in September more than offset higher agricultural export prices. The price index for U.S. exports declined 2.1 percent over the past year, the largest 12-month decrease since January 2024

Since June of 2022 the export price index is down 11.9% and the import price index is down 5.2%. In isolation, this could be net negative to GDPNow model but this depends more on what the model expects rather than the data itself. This makes it much more of a guess than might seem obvious by looking at the data

Heavy metals, pesticides in school lunches

Testing commissioned by Spotlight on America and conducted by the Health Research Institute, an accredited independent lab in Iowa, detected 38 different pesticides in just one elementary school lunch

Food items served to school kids in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., contained heavy metals, including lead, and roughly 50 pesticides. Many wheat-based items contained the weedkiller glyphosate, commonly marketed as Roundup, which causes cancer and disrupts immune function

A single strawberry cup contained 23 pesticides. Some samples contained cadmium, a heavy metal known to increase the risk of lung cancer, at a level 12 times higher than the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) limit for bottled water

The lab also found arsenic in rice at levels 6 times higher than what’s allowed in apple juice

Meta engineer admits Facebook demotes anti-Kamala Harris posts

James O’Keefe claims that a Meta engineer admitted in a candid interview with an undercover journalist with O’Keefe Media Group that Facebook demotes anti-Kamala Harris posts

Jeevan Gyawali, a senior software engineer with Meta, appeared to reveal in a hidden camera interview that accounts posting anti-Kamala Harris content could be shadowbanned while the posts get demoted

“Say your uncle in Ohio said something about Kamala Harris is unfit to be a president because she doesn’t have a child, that kind of shit is automatically demoted,” Gyawali appeared to say in the heavily edited video

Gyawali also appeared to say that the person “would not be notified,” which translates into a shadowban. The poster’s engagement and impressions would likely decrease. He also appeared to talk about Meta’s “Integrity Team” controlling content through something allegedly called “civic classifiers – a system meant to shadowban users

“There is an integrity team,” he said.  “That’s like a pretty significant team and they build all these classifiers.”

What would Trump’s mass deportation of immigrants cost?

Trump promises the largest deportation project in history. But what does it mean?

The Center for Migration Studies estimates US Undocumented Population Increased to 11.7 Million in July 2023. How are we going to take millions of these people and drag them out?

J.D. Vance’s answer was to shut of immigration and do it in pieces starting with criminals

Vance also suggests taxing immigrants’ ability to send money abroad and then 20% will leave voluntarily. Assuming we accept that idea, what about the other 12 million immigrants?

It would take thousands of officers to hunt down migrants, many in uncooperative sanctuary cities, large holding facilities, and cooperation from other countries. There would also be huge legal challenges

The American Immigration Council (AIC) estimates the total cost of deportation (not counting the knock on impacts) at $315 billion. That’s about $21,000 per person

Should our country approve such costs right now and start certain activities ASAP, or is it better to shelve the migration problem given its expensiveness?

China's grand strategy: primacy or balancing?

As China continues its meteoric rise, scholars and policymakers have been asking: Is China pursuing a strategy of global primacy, or is it more focused on balancing the international system?

Will China remain an ambitious yet cautious player in world affairs, or will it pursue outright dominance, fundamentally reshaping global governance?

China’s grand strategy is undoubtedly shaped by history, geography, systemic pressures, and its relative power, often quantified as “comprehensive national power” or CNP. To understand whether China is moving toward a strategy of primacy or balancing, experts explore these factors through a classical realist lens that accounts for both systemic constraints and domestic considerations

The debate over China’s grand strategy remains open, with competing visions of its future direction. While Xi’s strategy appears focused on maximization, systemic pressures, economic realities, and domestic challenges may force a shift toward balancing in the near future

Whether this is a de facto strategy or a deliberate shift will depend on how China navigates its ongoing rise and the international community’s response to it

As China continues to rise, debates akin to those that took place in the U.S. in the 1940s may emerge within China’s strategic circles. Just as the U.S. grappled with the question of whether to pursue primacy or balance after World War II, China’s leaders may soon face a similar dilemma. For now, the signs point toward an evolving grand strategy — one that may well transition into a new phase of balancing as China reaches the limits of its rise

There is no climate emergency

By Everett Piper

It is hurricane season, and as predictable as the sunrise, the the mainstream media is screaming: “Climate change! Climate change! We only have 10 years to save the planet!” Is any of this hysteria justified? Well, let’s move beyond the emotions and the politics and “trust the science.”

Let’s start with the historical record for North Carolina. If you look at the longitudinal data, you might be surprised to find that the recent events associated with Hurricane Helene are not unprecedented

For example, on July 16, 1916, Asheville was submerged beneath several feet of floodwater, similar to what we see today. It seems that the 1916 Charleston hurricane dumped more than 22 inches of rain over western North Carolina in athat they just can’t help themselves. They are brainwashed and incapable of rational thought

Was this because of climate change, or was it something else? Maybe something that we used to call weather before the government realized it could potentially control an entire population if it could scare the masses into compliance by getting them to believe a 100-year flood is an “act of man” rather than an “act of God”?

German e-car owners are increasingly switching back to combustion vehicles

While electric vehicles are described as the wave of the future, new troubling statistics from Germany’s largest auto insurance company show that many electric vehicle owners may be very unsatisfied with the performance of their vehicles

The data from Huk-Coburg shows that 34% of all electric car owners switched back to a combustion automobile when purchasing a new vehicle so far this year. With Germany serving as the largest automobile market in Europe, this data is sure to raise questions about the EU’s new law that will completely ban combustion engines for all new vehicles by 2035

Last year, 28% switched back to gas or diesel engines from electric vehicles, while in 2022, this figure was 17.5%. The year before, it was 14.2%

Many of these people initially went into their electric car purchase with an open mind and perhaps even enthusiasm for what they saw as the future of automobile transportation. The fact is that their electric vehicles do not offer the performance they have come to expect

In the other direction, owners of combustion cars are purchasing electric vehicles at a record low rate since this data first started being tracked. Only 3.6% of combustion car buyers are making the switch to electric this year

The electric car market in Germany is collapsing. Earlier this year, Sascha Coccorullo, head of strategy at ADAC SE, said that “the federal government’s goal of 15 million electric cars by 2030 is already impossible to achieve.”

The Nobel Peace Prize committee issues one of its more strange prizes

By Andrea Widburg, deputy editor for American Thinker

The Nobel Peace Prize has long been nothing more than the “Leftist Wet Dream Prize.” This year is another in that list, but it offends me more than many of those nonsensical awards because I take this one very, very personally because it went to a group that seeks to outlaw all nuclear weapons

These demands always attack the vulnerable consciences of the sane West while leaving weapons in the hands of nations like Iran and North Korea that aren’t deterred by mutually assured destruction

From the beginning, the Nobel Peace Prize had a naïve edge regarding the awards

This year’s award is another in a long line of anti-nuclear efforts. The Prize went to a Japanese organization called Nihon Hidankyo, “for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.”

Big Tech goes nuclear

After a slew of high-profile nuclear disasters over the past decades that caused death, destruction, and an HBO original series, many argued humanity should put nuclear aside given the astronomical risk if something goes wrong

Instead, Silicon Valley is ushering in a new era of nuclear power in order to—you guessed it—enable artificial intelligence

In just the past month, Microsoft revived a reactor on the notorious Three Mile Island, while Google inked a deal to purchase power from small modular nuclear reactors

On Wednesday, Amazon announced that it signed an agreement with Virginia’s utility firm, Dominion Energy, to plan the construction of a nuclear reactor near Dominion’s already-existing nuclear power station in the state

AI isn’t just expensive—it’s energy intensive, too. This past summer, Google admitted that its AI tech had already driven up its corporate emissions by 13% last year, setting the company back in its carbon emissions goal

To be fair, it’s not just Big Tech that’s in favor of nuclear power. Many scientists see it as the most reliable source of green energy as nations around the globe aim to move past fossil fuels. According to a Pew Research study conducted in May, a majority of Americans support nuclear power
