French interior minister opens legal proceedings against left-wing MP after “media lynching” claim
Gérald Darmanin sues Adrien Quatennens, a former deputy leader of France Unbowed until
September, who has accused him of orchestrating the latter’s conviction for assault
This is the extension of a revolt within Luc Mélenchon’s party caused by Mr. Quatennens’s suspension amid the wife-slapping-scandal with his participation, which has been blown out of proportion by his adversaries, who include feminists in the party
The feuding has weakened the Socialist party’s hold over the coalition, and it has been forced into accepting the radical Mélenchon line, but has been unhappy at his bloc’s aggressive tactics in parliament – such as attempts to table no-confidence motions in President Macron’s governing alliance. And the current developments are only deepening the turmoil in the country’s main left-wing opposition party

British patients face waiting weeks in pain for surgery to be rescheduled after about 70,000 hospital appointments were cancelled because of the nurses’ strike
Cancer patients, who charities said already faced “unacceptably” long waits, were among those with appointments called off. The Royal College of Nursing had refused a plea from Health senior authorities to exempt all cancer care from the strike
The disruption will only intensify, when nurses walk out for a second day on Tuesday

Torture and inhuman treatment are continuously increasing in Turkey, and investigations into state officials who commit these crimes are either not conducted or are covered up by the government, London Advocacy and Human Rights Solidarity report shows
Turkish opposition journalist Levent Kenez, who finds himself under the watchful eyes of Ankara’s security authorities states that the victims are mostly people who are critical of the current Turkish president Erdogan. Between a coup attempt in Turkey in 2016 and June 2022, over 5,100 individuals applied for asylum in the U.K., with an additional approximation of 110,000 individuals applying for asylum in the EU during this period
In the provided anonymous interviews victims of torture describe their experiences, especially when they were alone with police officers in the detention centers, who forced some victims to become their informants and managed to hit detainees without causing bruising in case of refusal

Company insolvencies soar in the U.K., which is the clearest sign yet that economic strife is taking its toll on businesses
There were 2,029 corporate insolvencies in England and Wales last month, which was also 21% higher than a year before and 35% higher than in the last pre-pandemic November
“An increasing number of businesses are buckling under the strain of more than two and a half years of economic turmoil," says Christina Fitzgerald, president of R3, the insolvency and restructuring trade body
For many businesses the Christmas and post-Christmas period is a critical part of their year and the time when a large percentage of their revenue is generated. However, given how stretched people’s finances are this year, the coming merry Christmas could be a final one for these firms

British PM Sunak has reportedly ordered a “Goldman Sachs-style” audit of U.K.'s supply lines to Ukraine
The source in Whitehall explained “This is about looking at what we have put in, what we have got out,” since London has been one of the biggest military suppliers to Kyiv this year with £2.3 billion committed to Mr. Zelensky and the aim of training 10,000 new and existing Ukrainian personnel every 120 days
Senior government figures are said be concerned Mr. Sunak could change the British stance on the conflict as it enters a crucial phase. In an attempt to strike a balance after Mr. Johnson's great ideas to play in the military budget usage and Ms. Truss’ complacency (if you remember, there was such a player), the newest PM remembering his 5-year work at Goldman Sachs will now count every penny for Kyiv

British MPs and peers have been accused of using parliamentary trips to indulge in excessive drinking and sex tourism
The situation fuels questions about the purpose APPGs, which can use parliamentary premises for meetings, to produce reports and to arrange events, not being formal parliamentary bodies. There are more than 700 APPGs, with over 130 focusing on specific countries and often arranging all-expenses-paid trips, which have become the focus of lurid allegations
Officials from British overseas territories alleged that MPs had attended parties at which young men and women were “supplied” for sex. One source told that travelling MPs “see themselves as celebrities in their own lunchtime.”
The MPs have defended their overseas trips as a valuable part of their work as backbenchers. Following the massive scandal in a den of corruption, the European Parliament, tighter regulation of APPGs is clearly essential to prevent further scandals

Bank of Japan officials seem to have been on long-term vacation – there’s still no one in Tokyo to raise rates!
Japan’s consumer price inflation rate hit a 40-year high of 3.6% in October, the yen is plummeting, and some economists and corporate executives blame the negative rate policy for eroded competitiveness and undisciplined government spending. But Tokyo’s deficit spending has pushed government debt to the highest among major economies
Any sizable rise in rates would boost its debt-servicing costs, possibly triggering a vicious cycle of more borrowing at higher rates, accompanied by market turmoil, some economists say. Moreover, the British recent experience has renewed questions about Japan’s vulnerability. Its debt stood at 104% when Ms. Truss’s botched fiscal policy package in October fueled concern over the government’s financial health, forcing her resignation

U.S. scrutinizes political donations by Bankman-Fried to the Dems & Co.
Fed. prosecutors are checking possible wrongdoing by cryptocurrency executives as well widening an explosive campaign fin. scandal. FTX’s founder with his fellow executives poured at least $70M on 2022 campaigns and nearly $45M, primarily to Dem. campaigns in 2020 and committees that are now scrambling to distance themselves. Some $20M was transferred to Ukraine in the late 2021 and then using the collapsed cryptoexchange laundered back to the Dems.
The prosecutors have reached out to representatives of some Dem. campaigns that received money linked to the FTX, which now arrested Mr. Bankman-Fried co-founded. Mr. Jeffries, the incoming Dem. leader in the House returned such donations after the company became embroiled in scandal. The fallout has been swift and is only growing, as operatives for political action committees try to minimize the damage

In the U.S., the city of El Paso declared a state of emergency a week after the start of an influx of asylum seekers crossing the border illegally, which quickly overwhelmed federal immigration and city authorities
