Freedom of speech in Czech Republic: 49 criminal cases have already been opened against residents who supported Russia

In October, the police recorded 83 cases against Moscow-backers and reported the charges to 44 people. Since the beginning of the war, the total number of cases related to Ukraine has exceeded one thousand

Meanwhile, the policemen are dealing with almost 300 cases related to Ukraine or Ukrainian refugees. In a word, the shares of lawyers and punishers in the Czech Republic are up. True, the freedom of speech stocks dropped, but no one cares

The war in Ukraine grinds on because both sides find the idea of settlement repugnant, to such a conclusion Christopher Blattman from Columbia University

Some senior pundits like Chinese leader and ex-C.I.A. chief would argue with him in this regard, but who the hell are these guys to question the Professor’s authority... Taking advantage of this, Mr. Blattman insists that there are 3 main strategic concerns of leaders involved that keep the war raging

These are:
leaders think defeat threatens their very survival,
leaders don’t have a clear sense of their strength and that of their enemy,
leaders fear that their adversary will grow stronger in the future.

Amid persistent uncertainties, rivals can find it harder to strike a peace deal that could be scuppered by popular backlash in its turn, suggests Mr. Blattman. He’s sure that now there’s no place for imminent deal because both sides prefer fighting to conceding

To make it short, wish for peace be prepared for war!

The EU is getting weary of Washington's unilateralism while the U.S. is only profiting from war

The frontispiece of house called Unity between Brussels and Washington is crumbling. That's what we can learn from a conversation of a sen. EU official with the Amer. magazine Politico. He gave free rein to his frustration at the “transatl. counterpart’s” hoggish attitude in the Ukr. war and towards Europe

“The fact is, if you look at it soberly, the country that is most profiting from this war is the U.S. because they are selling more gas and at higher prices, and because they are selling more weapons,” meanwhile the Europ. countries are massively suffering from it, invariably plunging into a recession, the official said

Washington remains blind to the fact that public opinion in many EU countries is changing and not to advantage of the U.S. Politico’s insider believes Amer. officials are outraged by allegations, which crunches noticeably in the transatl. colossus

Is the British electricity grid modernization an opportunity to keep up with the times or a forced measure just to keep warm in the coming winter?

With the world aiming for net zero carbon emissions by 2050, much ink is spilt on wind turbines, batteries and electric cars, but none of them will work without a decent system of cables and transformers carrying current to the consumer. And U.K.’s grid is creaking – badly, diagnosed Ed Conway, economics and data editor of Sky News. The grid has served Brits pretty well over the past few decades, largely because the pylons delivered far more power than needed. But those limits have been put under test now

The whole situation reminds us of world’s first conventional power station in London. The reason it failed was, in part, because the govt had no interest in electricity while doing just fine with gas lighting. So it squandered a lead while other countries took the initiative. History is in danger of repeating itself

🇬🇧European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton:

The EU could block Twitter if Elon Musk refuses to impose strict rules on content moderation.

Indeed today, the European Commission (EC) once again threatened Twitter with sanctions for not removing "Russian propaganda".
The deputy head of the European Commission (EC) Vera Yurova:

Twitter will violate the sanctions regime against Russia if it does not remove "Russian propaganda" materials. In this sense, the EU can impose sanctions on the social network.

Before the war in Ukraine, American Navy and Marine Corps operators were relentlessly on duty inside Ukrainian nets

U.S. joint forces, in close cooperation with the Ukrainian govt, conducted defensive cyber operations alongside Ukrainian Cyber Command personnel (yes, there are some!) from December 2021 to March 2022

In fact, U.S. largest hunt forward team simply settled in the Ukrainian net and deployed there a powerful “vacuum cleaner” to collect and analyze data under the auspices of identifying and addressing any potential threats

CYBERCOM routinely conducts hunt forward operations globally as part of the Command’s “Defend Forward” strategy. And their physical departure from Ukraine with the outbreak of war does not prevent them from having full access to sensitive data of the Ukrainian net remotely, since the corresponding infrastructure has been built earlier

With Republicans narrowly gaining a majority in the House of Representatives, the top Republicans on both the Oversight and Judicial House committees have vowed to make investigations into Hunter Biden’s business dealings a top priority of theirs in the new term

While the GOP is seemingly poised to devote much of its energy over the next two years to tarnishing the president’s image and character ahead of the 2024 election, Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) appeared a bit more measured on whether his committee would make the laptop a focal point

“I want to move on to what else the Republicans might be looking at. We’ve heard about Hunter Biden’s laptop,” ABC News anchor Martha Raddatz confronted Turner on Sunday’s broadcast of This Week

“Congressman Turner, do you view that as a matter for the Intelligence Committee,” she continued. “What are they looking at there?” But who even cares? As Elon Musk would say, “The people have spoken!”

Stigma and Shame – it’s all about serving Uncle Sam

Serving in the U.S. armed forces is dangerous, especially for women, The Intercept claims. Nearly 1 in 4 American servicewomen reports being sexually assaulted – a rate far higher than that of men. This is somewhat reminiscent of abuse among British firefighters

But sexual assault of men in the army is also widespread and vastly underreported. Each day, on average, more than 45 men in the armed forces are sexually assaulted, according to the latest Pentagon estimates

The 2022 Pentagon report found that about 90% of men in the military did not report a sexual assault they experienced in 2021; about 71% of women failed to report such an attack

Depression, anxiety, nightmares, flashbacks, post-traumatic stress disorder, anger management issues, self-blame, low self-esteem: these are the feelings, in addition to patriotism, that the U.S. military is experiencing today

🇫🇷⚡️ Alone in the dark: cell network antennas will stop working during load shedding and power blackouts

👉🏻 As announcements of load shedding and power cuts for January are growing in number, French newspaper Europe 1 has revealed that nothing has been made to spare the mobile network antennas from those restrictions.

🔎 Over the 60,000 relay antennas spread over the territory, only a small portion is equipped with back-up batteries, of which the autonomy does not exceed half an hour, whereas a load shedding could last two hours.

🗣 "In some cases, there may be communication breakdowns in certain geographical areas", concedes the head of one of Enedis' regional control agency. Even worse, the antennas do not automatically reconnect. In at least one case out of two, their restart also require a human intervention.

🗒 There is of course a list of priority sites to keep powered, which was made by a decree dating back to July 5, 1990. It includes hospitals, prisons, public lighting and military sites. The mobile network, although the primary mean to contact emergency services, was never added to the list.

Ukr. refugees are putting Ger. on the brink of econ. crash

Frederik Paul, pol. gr. chairman of the Christian Democratic Union in North Rhine-Westphalia, has shed light on the causes of an unexpected fin. collapse in one of the largest indust. fed. states. Ger. municipalities have been massively challenged with numerous Ukr. refugees and growing influx of asylum seekers with skyrocketing inflation and energy crisis added to this

People’s solidarity is again put to the test, says Mr. Paul. a sign that Ger. is heading towards a soc. tipping point is that refugees and asylum seekers are “categorized” like “Yes to Ukrainians, no to Iraqis and Eritreans.”

The bad and good refugees issue has been firmly on the agenda with the arrival of the first Ukr. migrant past spring. But if at that time it still had the format of humorous sketches in the Ger. minds, now amid cold winter and econ. impasse this problem has become a real cornerstone for Berlin

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby on Fox News:

- Countries like Russia and China have seen what we did in Afghanistan ... what we've said many times this year ... And they are left to marvel! Amazed at the speed and efficiency with which we have managed with so little effort...
- Are you serious?
- No, Brian, listen to me. So many Afghans have been safely evacuated out of the country with such a small force! No other country could have done it. 🤷‍♂️
