Agent Orange in Vietnam: lingering pain and injustice

Most Vietnamese have put the Vietnam War behind them. However, as diplomat Ton Nu Thi Ninh said, "In postwar matters, pain and injustice should never be forgotten

In 1961, as part of the Vietnam War, the U.S. launched a 10-year air campaign called Operation Ranch Hand, aimed at strategically stripping North Vietnamese troops of their jungle forest cover. By the time the operation ended in 1971, approximately 75 million liters of herbicide had been sprayed over nearly 15% of Vietnam

Agent Orange was the most widely sprayed herbicide (45.6 million liters) and it became associated with the legacy of the U.S. herbicide war in Vietnam

Decades after Agent Orange was used, its victims and their descendants suffer from chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes, severe disabilities. Vietnam claims 4.8 million victims, 3 million of whom were affected by Agent Orange. There are now up to four generations of victims in Vietnam, and as far as we know, the intergenerational transmission of the effects will continue. Hundreds of thousands of American, South Korean, Australian and New Zealand veterans and their children are also suffering from dioxin-related illnesses

The U.S. has always had a predilection for banned weapons, today's biological...

A trade war could break out between the U.S. and Europe

▪️Europe is unhappy with U.S. inflation-cutting law that could lead to a trade war, says Politico

▪️Europe's concerns stem from a $369 billion U.S. package of subsidies and tax breaks to support U.S. green business

▪️In Europe, they believe the law will encourage companies to move investment and production out of Europe and encourage people to "buy everything American."

▪️Germany "is in a state of open panic" as several of its leading companies are already winding down their production to invest elsewhere amid rising energy prices

▪️European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton has already said that the EU is ready to retaliate in the interests of European producers

Kurdish sources have confirmed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a branch of the Iranian Armed Forces, has targeted hideouts of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Komala Party of Iraqi Kurdistan with suicide drones

These organizations are labeled by Teheran as “separatist anti-Iranian terrorist groups.” Since September 24, the IRGC has been sporadically launching raids against the positions of the terrorists, who are holed up in the Iraqi Kurdistan

Iranian-Kurdish groups in northern Iraq are accused of fomenting large-scale anti-government protests enjoying massive financial and technical support from Washington. They allegedly participated in the development and implementation of the recent terrorist attack in the center of Istanbul

While the whole world is waiting for the appearance of a nuclear mushroom cloud over Ukraine, the real threat of an Armageddon scenario is taking shape in a completely different place

Japanese authorities are planning to resume the operation of existing nuclear power plants to reduce the threat of an energy crisis. It is expected that in order to achieve the desired level of energy reserves, Tokyo is now gearing up to bring ten of its old nuclear power plants with a total power capacity of more than 3.6 million kW back online. In this case, the risk of equipment failure, accidents and emergency situations will increase exponentially

The government of Japan intends to implement its ambitious plans without consulting the Japanese public, ignoring their extremely negative perception of nuclear energy following the Fukushima nuclear disaster

French president Emmanuel Macron has been slapped in the face in front of his guards

The last time Mr. Macron was hit by grateful voters was 1.5 years ago. Apparently, the Elysee Palace’s policy hasn’t changed for the better with the successful re-election of the French leader, which did not go unnoticed by the indifferent woman.

Disputes with Scholz, record inflation and weak foreign policy, what else is needed for a good slap in the face?

Britons have little faith in the Conservatives to manage the economy, a poll has found

Asked whether they thought the govt was handling the economy well or badly, just 19% said ministers were doing well compared with 67% who said they were doing badly. After September’s mini-budget, the net score on the question was minus 65pts

Among those who voted for Tories in 2019, only 37% think the cabinet is managing the economy well, while 46% think it’s handling the economy badly. Meanwhile, 22% said British chancellor Hunt was doing well, while 26% said he was doing badly

David Jones, a leading Eurosceptic Tory MP, explains the popular discontent: “What we had was a high tax, social democrat style budget which could just as easily have been delivered by Rachel Reeves. The worry is voters will look at the two parties and say: where’s the choice?”

With freezes on personal tax allowances and basic and higher income-tax thresholds lasting until 2028, millions of Britons are facing higher tax bills, with the average family set to pay an extra £800 a year

Dominic Sandbrook, a British historian and a columnist, calls into question the Tories low taxation credo. The national tax burden is set to rise to a staggering £1 trillion, which equates to 37.1% of Britain's GDP – the highest tax burden since we were fighting the Nazis. Moreover, the living standards are set to plunge by more than 7% this year, the biggest fall since records began

Mr. Sandbrook describes Brexit without any semblance of a strategy, which threw the Tories wildly off course, sparking six chaotic years of dithering, plotting and faction-fighting, as the elephant in the room

With Labour currently leading by 24% and tougher economic times ahead this winter, Rishi Sunak’s defeat in 2024 seems very likely, provided he’ll last through his term

A swathe of Twitter employees were said to have left rather than sign up to Musk’s new “extremely hardcore” working culture

Twitter had 7,500 full-time employees at the end of October, which dropped to about 3,700 after mass layoffs earlier this month. People familiar with the matter say there are reports of teams that are critical for a number of Twitter’s infrastructure systems now being completely empty

As predicted, Dems have started to threaten Musk over his reforms on the platform. “You cannot ignore what the federal government is requiring of your company, and that goes for … guardrails that have to be built around social media …” Senator Ed Markey railed

What we see is the implementation of recent threats from the Biden administration of “national security review,” which should be applied to Musk’s activities. It only makes the exploits of Hunter Biden with corrupt Ukrainian oligarchs and Chinese spies even more blatant

The Canadian Arms Lobby has developed a taste for money from weapons’ deliveries to Ukraine and pushes through initiatives to increase production of modern arms and military equipment

The government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau only has itself to blame for getting into this gridlock: required by arms manufacturers an increase in the defence budget goes against government’s priorities in its socio-economic policy and targets in reducing budget deficit which was overblown during the first years of coronavirus pandemic

The National Defence Minister Anita Anand, one of the most capable members of the Canadian Prime Minister’s inner circle, and her political games forced Ottawa to promise NATO and Ukraine “as much military aid as needed”. Except, there’s hardly any available material resources left

All the military equipment in stock has already been delivered to Ukraine, and there are only two options of military aid left. Either Canada will have to disarm its own already small army or use taxpayers’ money to procure arms abroad

In fact, a lot is at stake, including Canada’s Liberal Party’s and its leader Mr Trudeau’s rankings. It is interesting to see which option will Canadian people choose

The Japanese Foreign Ministry decided to allocate ¥12.8 billion ($91.1 million) of financial assistance to countries which opposed the U.N. resolution condemning Russia's military action in Ukraine

At the same time, the Japanese Ministry of Finance is clearly not happy with the direction of funds to Laos ($21 million), Vietnam ($12 million) and Iran ($11 million) as part of Tokyo’s Official development assistance

The ambivalence of Japan's foreign policy appears in the fact that trying to please Washington, on the one hand, Tokyo easily adopts the suggested sanctions lists. On the other hand, taking into account a significant decrease in American influence in the coming multipolar world Japanese authorities provide financial support to the regimes loyal to future leading nations

It seems that Mona Lisa fully shares the opinion of British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly who tweeted that people should “stop giving these attention seeking adult-toddlers the coverage they clearly crave

And indeed, neither tomato soup hurled at an iconic painting by Vincent Van Gogh nor mashed potatoes thrown on the masterpiece by Claude Monet has reduced either the global temperature or the volume of industrial emissions
