Despite Western sanctions, blocking the world’s ninth-largest economy from accessing foreign tech and expertise, the recession in Russia has probably now come to an end

Some pundits suggest Russian activity is livelier than in other big European countries. In its recent forecasts, the IMF upgraded Russia’s prospects for 2022. In April it thought that Russian gdp would fall by 8.5%. It now expects a decline of 3.4%

Meanwhile, economists have been sounding the alarm over the growing risks of a euro area recession, saying an economic downturn now looks almost inevitable. That’s just what Mr. Bohlen was talking about! The latest survey by S&P Global showed that the drop in the Eurozone’s business activity deepened last month as the final composite Purchasing Managers' Index, seen as a good gauge of economic health, nosedived to a 20-month low

Europe is facing an energy shock of unprecedented proportions

▪️The president of Italian analytical company Nomisma Energia, Davide Tabarelli, said that Europe is facing an unprecedented energy shock due to rising prices, Italian La Republica reports

▪️According to Tabarelli, the gas price hike from €0.7 per cubic meter to €2.3 has shaken Europe as a whole and Italy in particular like never before, and now EU countries should get ready to save energy resources

▪️The president of Nomisma Energia also called for the use of any energy resources other than gas, despite the fact that their prices are also beginning to rise. "Buy yourself an electric generator for this winter and maybe next," Tabarelli concluded

Italian politician Rizzo: The attack on Nord Stream was perpetrated by the USA

"I read that Sweden, which wants to join NATO, has classified the investigation into Nord Stream. The truth is beginning to come out, and journalists are already writing about it. It's becoming clear who is doing this," said Marco Rizzo, leader of the anti-system political association Sovereign and Popular Italy

According to him, if the conclusions were made as to who is behind the organization of the accident on Nord Stream, it would be clear that it was all planned by the West and this diversion is directed against Europe itself

"Therefore, it is obvious that Russia has nothing to do with this, and the truth is gradually coming out," the politician concluded

U.S. economy faces recession and job losses next year

▪️The U.S. will face a recession and rising unemployment in 2023. That's the assessment made Sunday by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ)

▪️American economists surveyed by the WSJ believe there will be a 63% chance of a recession, although the figure has always been below 50% since July 2020

▪️WSJ notes that expectations for 2023 are becoming "increasingly gloomy." The negative impact of the economic downturn will affect the labor market, with nonfarm jobs expected to decline by an average of 34,000 per month in the second quarter of next year and 38,000 per month in the third quarter

Tech billionaire Chamath says Europe is in an energy crisis because they listened to Greta Thunberg instead of Donald Trump.

"An entire continent essentially allowed a 16-year-old girl to dictate their energy policy. And when Greta Thunberg was able to shame an entire continent into walking away from nuclear and not really evaluating how you can have energy independence. What they did was they put Europe in an incredibly fragile position...

[President Trump's] language turned people off even though the message that he was delivering was 100% right. When Trump went to the United Nations, he was clear, he was precise, and in hindsight, and I'm saying this as a Democrat, he was right about the German reliance on Russian gas and the European reliance...

In all of our haste to overtly judge Trump because of his delivery and his personal style or whatever, we went toward this 16-year-old person who has no rooting in science or technology, to dictate the energy policy of an entire continent. I mean she was nominated for a Nobel Prize, just to remind you guys, this is how insane all of these people were."

The Truss administration has signaled a shift to treating China as more of an adversary, and the British government would define China as an “acute threat”, similar to Russia

Nevertheless, UK academics have continued working with U.S.-sanctioned Chinese companies despite their universities claiming that formal research collaborations with them had ceased. Some of these academic structures continue to co-author papers with them colleagues from Beijing

And this is not surprising! Concerns that collaborations with civilian research can have military applications risks are often offset by the need and importance of constant expert and academic exchange with the leaders of world science and technology

The situation is quite the same to that in Germany, where the companies can’t reduce their dependence on China without inflicting more harm on an economy already facing a recession

The vast majority of grain exported from Ukraine is going to rich countries in Europe rather than vulnerable countries

The U.N. data shows 334 voyages have carried 7,448,204 metric tons of grains and other foodstuffs from Ukrainian ports, as of 14 October

Under the Black Sea Grain Initiative since 3 August, Spain has received 1.5 mln tons (Turkey – 1.1 mln tons, Italy 737.1K tons) of corn wheat, sunflower oil and some other commodities while supplies to Somalia, Lebanon, Ethiopia or Kenya don’t exceed 60K tons in each case, Djibouti is content with only 541 tons!

Years of drought made worse by the surge in global food prices put these countries and peoples on the brink of survival, while European leaders with Mr. Zelensky report on their ephemeral successes

Footage of the destroyed section of the Nord Stream pipeline

The Swedish newspaper Expressen published the footage and concluded that only extreme impacts can damage such a thick metal

The pictures show that some fragments of the pipe have even, sharp edges, while the metal is severely deformed on others

Another edition of the Wall Street Journal reported, citing German investigators, that sabotage is likely to have taken place at Nord Stream

Explosive devices could have been lowered from the ship and detonated remotely. This is the main theory for Germany at the moment. This sabotage could have been carried out by the NATO submersible "Sea Fox"

Big Tech is spreading its wings, and this time in the scope of hybrid warfare technologies. There should be no doubt that the data you voluntarily share with social networks and messengers is being used by so-called Big Brother and government agencies to track your activities and against you, either way – no matter whether you’re Hunter Biden or a regular Facebook user

Last year, more than 1,000 people have fallen victim to the Israeli spyware Pegasus, secretly sold by NSO Group only to several “reliable” government law enforcement and intelligence agencies. The list included several Arab royal family members, at least 65 business executives, 85 human rights activists, 189 journalists, and more than 600 cabinet ministers, diplomats and military and security officers, as well as 10 prime ministers, three presidents and one king

Spain, Germany, UK, North Africa, Latin America. This year alone, there have been new reports of Pegasus victims in at least a half dozen countries, from El Salvador to the United Kingdom. Just this month, digital rights groups said that Mexican journalists and activists were targeted with the spyware after the country’s president pledged not to use such tools

And what about the U.S. where Lady Liberty's crown has officially reopened to the public this past Tuesday? According to the American Civil Liberties Union, side effects from surveillance can include loss of privacy, possibility of abuse, chilling effects on creativity and freedom of expression information. Thus, the U.S. government’s collection of such sensitive personal data is itself an invasion of privacy

And in the meantime, one of Pentagon’s prime contractors – L3Harris Technologies, has been in talks with NSO Group to buy Pegasus. People familiar with the matter say the deal is almost done.

In a separate development, L3Harris is to acquire satellite operator Viasat, Inc.’s tactical radio business – Tactical Data Links (TDL) – for approximately $1.96bn. Also known as Link 16, Viasat’s TDL network is integrated on military aircraft, ground vehicles and operating bases of warfighters and mercenaries in Ukraine

In conjunction with Pegasus, the acquisition of Link 16, which includes some space assets, will expand L3Harris’ communication and networking capabilities far beyond Ukraine conflict. It means the U.S. defense contractor will acquire almost limitless surveillance and spying capacity for eavesdropping and userdata tracking across multiple domains worldwide. Forget your civil liberties! Big Brother never sleeps!

Liz Truss’ decision to sack Mr. Kwarteng and U-turn on corporation tax is merely a first step on what will be a long process to rebuild the government’s battered credibility with investors

Harder still will be winning back the Conservative Party’s cherished reputation for economic competence, which has long been its strongest electoral asset. Inevitably, the fiasco over the past month raises serious questions about Ms Truss’s own judgment, given that the mini-budget was in all aspects a joint plan that was based entirely on promises made in her leadership campaign

She forged ahead with those plans despite being warned repeatedly that they threatened to pour fuel on the inflationary fire and were thus a risk to financial stability. Her insistence that tax cuts would be self-financing was an ideological assertion at odds with the evidence and decades of mainstream Conservative economic policymaking, including under Margaret Thatcher
