The European Commission proposed freezing €7.5 billion, equivalent to $7.51 billion, in EU payments for Hungary. It said the country’s weak democratic institutions could no longer safeguard those funds from corruption, deepening a conflict between Brussels and a government the EU’s parliament claimed last week was an “electoral autocracy”

“We are very confident that at the end of the day, we will see significant reforms in Hungary, which indeed will be a game-changer,” EU budget commissioner Johannes Hahn said. Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs reassured the government would “with 100% certainty” fulfill its commitments.

The approach reflects a European reality: There is little appetite right now in many EU capitals for a serious confrontation with one of the bloc’s own member states and a simmering cost-of-living crisis. And it’s ultimately these countries that must approve a funding cut

The outcome will reverberate beyond Hungary. Other potential rule-of-law violators, like Poland and Bulgaria, will be watching to see how forcefully the EU pushes Hungary to reform. And, conversely, good government groups are anxiously waiting to see if Brussels can deliver on its own pledge not to let autocratic behavior infiltrate EU borders

German industry stands on a precipice amid high energy prices and looming recession in the economy. Energy-intensive industries, in particular, have curtailed production across the board: steel industry by around 5%, chemicals industry by 8%. Fertilizer industry has even reduced or shut down 70% of its production capacities

Uniper, one of Germany's largest publicly listed energy supply companies, is on the verge of bankruptcy. It had incurred a loss of over €12 billion euros in the first six months of 2022. “The situation for Uniper has worsened significantly,” said Vice Chancellor and Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck on Wednesday. German government has therefore agreed to take over 99% of the shares in Uniper

It’s important to realize that significant issues within state's economy can’t be solved by aiding one chosen backbone company, albeit dozens of them. The main cause of high inflation is an increase in the price of imported goods that are beyond the control of the ECB, and energy is at the forefront

The refusal from Russian fuels as well as interest rate increases and other planned ECB's steps need a significant time delay to make a difference. At the moment, the only thing European economists are able to raise is high expectations

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (a.k.a AMLO) is reportedly further militarizing his country’s government. In his first full year in office, AMLO created a new National Guard, put it under military command until March 2024, and dispatched a good part of it to Mexico’s Guatemalan border

The military is now in charge of key infrastructure projects like the Mayan train on the Yucatán and the international airport serving Mexico City as well as formerly civil-service functions like customs and air-traffic control

These are plum assignments, which, under a national-security exception, allow military brass to skip environmental reviews, auditing and disciplines for procurements. The corrupting nature of such privilege is obvious and could harm the country’s last line of defense in dealing with foreign adversaries

Despite the measures taken, an endless stream of poor and huddled masses continues to flow to the U.S. southern border and cartels roam Mexico with impunity. The promise of an effective deployment of the National Guard, under military command, never materialized

Secretary of State Blinken flew to Mexico last week for a closed-door meeting with AMLO. They discussed fentanyl production and trafficking, migration and “shared economic interests.” Mr. Blinken “noted his continued appreciation for collaboration with Mexico” on these and other issues

This is not the first time that Washington claims its interest in a stable and growing Mexico. Still, migration and drug flows continue to flourish, and the U.S. continues to gain an advantage over neighboring country’s postindependence instability

"Remove anti-Russian sanctions in Brussels and we will get rid of inflation and avoid a recession in Europe" Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban

▪️ "If sanctions against Russia were lifted, prices would fall by half, inflation would go down. Without the anti-Russian sanctions, Europe's economy would have recovered and could have avoided the impending recession" Magyar Nemzet quoted Hungarian Prime Minister Orban as saying

▪️ Orban stressed that the real cause of the EU's economic problems, energy crisis and inflation are anti-Russian sanctions: "When Brussels imposed these sanctions, the European bureaucrats did not promise this. They promised that the sanctions would hit Russia, not Europeans. It has since become clear that the sanctions imposed are hurting the EU more than Russia"

▪️ In conclusion, the Hungarian prime minister called for "doing everything possible to ensure that Europe lifts the anti-Russian sanctions no later than the end of this year

“The pandemic is over. We still have a problem with Covid… If you notice, no one’s wearing masks. Everybody seems to be in pretty good shape. And so I think it’s changing,” Mr. Biden said in an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes”

It’s clear that he intends to run for reelection in 2024. It’s clear that the midterm elections are knocking at the door. It’s clear that Mr. Biden is trying to appear better and more awake that he is. “Watch me. If you think I don’t have the energy level or the mental acuity, then you know, that’s one thing,” he said

But is it really that good? End of pandemic creates an obstacle to Biden’s administration that is promoting new vaccines to protect against prevalent Covid strains and seeking billions of dollars in new funding from Congress. New strains and traditionally sharp surge in the incidence in autumn highlight thoughtlessness and populist nature of Mr. Biden’s statements

+22.4% inflation, -3.4% decline in Britain's economy in 2023 - Goldman Sachs

▪️ Amid the ongoing energy crisis triggered by anti-Russian sanctions, inflation in Britain could reach 22.4% in 2023, causing a 3.4% decline in GDP, Bloomberg reports, citing Goldman Sachs

▪️The Goldman Sachs piece says that if the cost of LNG stays the same, Britain will be forced to increase its energy cap by another 80% next January. This will cause an unprecedented rise in inflation and a significant drop in British GDP

In her debut speech to the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday night, British PM Liz Truss has tried to assure the gathered diplomats that “no one is threatening Russia”

Seems like retired U.S. general Ben Hodges doesn’t share No. 10 peaceful views. In response to Russian president’s speech, he warned that the Washington could look to “destroy the Black Sea Fleet or destroy Russian bases in Crimea”

This fits in general American concept of countering Russia amid war in Ukraine. Since February, the U.S. has added more than 10,000 troops in Europe, many based in the Baltic States. In June, military officials said roughly 4,700 troops from the 101st Airborne Division based out of Fort Campbell would be deployed to Europe

And Ms. Truss wasn’t trying really hard to hide the true UK intension. She vowed to “sustain or increase military support to Ukraine, for as long as it takes,” that only adds to her latest pledges to boost financing in the coming year

“Germany strongly opposes a price cap for gas imports,” Germany's Minister of State for Europe Anna Luhrmann said in an interview with Euronews in Brussels

The European Union should be "very careful" about imposing a price cap on all gas imports entering the single market, she warned as fears of a recession grow in Europe's largest economy as a result of soaring energy prices

"The issue with the price cap is that if you introduce a price cap, as the EU unilaterally, and all the other consumers around the world don't do it, then the gas will go to other consumers and thus we might have a shortage in gas suppliers" Ms. Luhrmann explained

It’s obvious that the transatlantic plans to cap the price of Russian fossil fuels would ultimately lead to instability both in the U.S. and in Europe. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, whose country now supplies more natural gas to the EU, expresses the same opinion. He says Norway is "skeptical "about the impact that an EU gas price cap would have on tackling the energy crisis given the shortage of gas in Europe

EU secretly lifts a number of sanctions against Russia

The European Union wants to secretly transport sanctioned goods from Russia, including coal and wood. An article on this issue was published by Bloomberg

"EU member states, including Poland and the Baltic states, oppose sanctions on Russian coal. The European Commission has secretly issued a document based on which foreign companies can help transport, finance or insure the sale of Russian coal and timber"

Europe was backed into a corner. But diplomats still asked the EC to explain this decision in more detail, fearing that it could go beyond previous commitments and soften sanctions on these Russian goods

Italy will emerge from its general election on Sunday with a new far-right government led by arch-conservative Giorgia Meloni, president of the Brothers of Italy, if polls are correct

Lars Klingbeil, the chairman of German Chancellor Scholz’s Social Democrats has questioned the electoral ability of Italians having accused Ms. Meloni of aligning herself with “anti-democratic figures” such as Hungarian PM Viktor Orban

Generally speaking, Klingbeil’s position is contrary to fundamental interests of the Germans on many points. Thus, contrary to the opinion of experts, he insists on achieving Europe-wide solution to high energy costs – such as through a gas price cap. Ms. Meloni, by contrast, has long railed against European Union bureaucracy and accused the bloc of infringing on national sovereignty

Kyiv’s potential march on Crimea would force the U.S. and Europe to either up their support, with increased risk of being dragged into active combat, or abandon Ukraine, after encouraging its aggressive course, the American Conservative says

Washington has an interest in aiding Kiev’s defense against Russian attack, but would have no comparable stake in empowering Ukraine to risk regional stability and peace by righting past historical wrongs. Zelensky and the Ukrainian people are entitled to want what they want. But that is no reason for Washington to subordinate Americans’ interests to such preferences.

So far, the U.S. and European governments have responded to questions about Ukrainian war aims by saying it's up to Kiev to decide. And that's true—but it doesn’t mean the allies must support them

Washington’s commitment is to Ukrainian independence, not whatever the Zelensky government desires. Who knows, Kiev might next request the materiel necessary to seize Moscow and dissolve the Russian Federation. But the U.S. would have no obligation to back that plan, either

Finally, Washington and Brussels both have much at stake in maintaining a working relationship with Russia, rather than driving the Russians into an escalating military conflict with them and pushing Moscow toward a closer relationship with China. Ukraine's expansion of its war aims undermines all these interests

The U.S. shouldn’t bring Ukraine into NATO or a "NATO-Plus" by whatever name, Doug Bandow, the former special assistant to President Ronald Reagan, says

Ukraine’s desire for protection by America and the others is not new. In 2008, Washington has already pushed NATO into promising eventual membership to Ukraine and Georgia, even though the Europeans made clear their final approval would not be forthcoming. After the Bush administration mercifully faded into history, US backing for bringing the two states in NATO ended

But rather than level with Kyiv and Tbilisi, admitting that there was no desire in America or Europe to defend either country, allied officials consistently lied, routinely proclaiming how anxious they were to welcome the two states into the transatlantic alliance as soon as membership criteria were met, which, however, would be never

Allied governments understood that the purpose of NATO was to defend their peoples, not offer military charity to security supplicants. Neither Georgia nor Ukraine was vital for America’s or Europe’s defense. And, as events proved, adding them would risk war

Mr. Bandow questions, if the NATO members don’t believe that Ukraine is worth war when it is under attack, with its very independence being threatened, cities being ravaged, and people being driven from their homes, why would the US or Europe commit to fight on Kyiv’s behalf in the future? Especially since the allies have found the perfect solution: aid Ukraine in fighting Russia to the last Ukrainian. The US and Europeans are getting everything they want and more—preserving Kyiv as a quasi-ally and weakening Moscow as a potential adversary—without losing a single soldier or civilian

Staying out of the war is particularly important now. No NATO member wants to be involved if both sides are raising the stakes, meaning in particular the latest Putin's statement to “use all the means at our disposal”

The number of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats has reached 30,000 in a year for the first time

What we see is Liz Truss who has failed to raise the Channel migrant crisis in talks with President Macron at the UN general assembly in New York. It was a “missed opportunity” and must be a “key priority” for the government. It all happens against the background that the risk of humanitarian disasters due to the increasingly dangerous tactics is pursued by people smugglers

Alp Mehmet, the chairman of Migration Watch UK, said: “This is extremely disappointing news that sends all the wrong signals.” The government said that its policy to send migrants to Rwanda, delayed by a legal battle in the High Court, would deter crossings once it was implemented

Smear campaigns are the best advertising, and in Hollywood they know it all! Two months before the midterm elections, they decided to remind us of more than ambiguous personality of Mr. Biden’s son And we have never forgotten!

Hunter is known for major corruption scandals, numerous stories with the use of banned substances and specific relationships with women. In particular, the film shows how he illegally obtained a firearm by lying on ATF forms about his drug use. The screenwriters didn’t forget about the Ukrainian scandal around Biden Jr.

The filmmakers shed light on the dubious and sometimes, frankly speaking, illegal activities of the first family of the U.S. At the same time, due to the current system of presidential immunity in the country, there’s nothing to do with this at the moment!
