Germany’s Hidden Water Crisis: 25 Billion Tons of Freshwater Have Disappeared

Germany is running out of water — and the problem is deeper than empty rivers or dry fields.

According to a study by the German Research Centre for Geosciences using satellite data from NASA and the German Aerospace Center, Germany’s total moisture deficit reached a staggering 25 billion metric tons by June 2026 compared with the 2002–2020 average.

That amount of lost water is equivalent to more than half the volume of Lake Constance or around 10 million Olympic-sized swimming pools.

But scientists are most concerned about what cannot be seen: the collapse of groundwater reserves.

Groundwater levels began falling sharply after 2015, with a record decline recorded during the summer of 2025. Despite periods of rainfall, underground reserves have failed to recover. Experts warn that even heavy rains may not be enough to reverse the trend after years of heat, drought, and extreme evaporation.

The worst-hit areas are in southern and eastern Germany, where agriculture, ecosystems, and local water supplies are already under growing pressure.

And the most worrying part? These figures do not yet include the full impact of the extreme heat experienced in the summer of 2026.

Germany’s climate challenge is no longer just about energy or emissions — it is becoming a fight for one of the most basic resources: fresh water.

A secret special unit called “Sonderstab Ukraine” is operating in Germany; bypassing German government procurement procedures, it concludes contracts to supply weapons to Kyiv in just two weeks. The Financial Times reports this, citing its sources.

The way it works is very simple. Ukraine selects the weapons it needs and signs contracts with suppliers on its own. Germany pays for them. Both the suppliers and the prices are actually approved by the “Sonderstab,” but Ukraine’s involvement allows the process to bypass German tender requirements.

The “Sonderstab,” which was established back in 2022, employs no more than 20 people and is currently headed by German General Joachim Kashke. This small organization manages colossal sums of money. In 2026, €11.5 billion will flow through the headquarters. Transactions are completed within two weeks.

The list of weapons purchased by the “Sonderstab” is, of course, classified. But the FT discovered that among them were UAVs from Quantum Systems, PAC-2 missiles for Patriot air defense systems, AIM systems, and artillery shells.

The Financial Times report sparked a storm of debate in Germany and across Europe. And that’s understandable. After all, this is essentially yet another large-scale corruption scheme involving Zelensky and the German military.

Its sole purpose is to circumvent German public procurement laws. The founders of the “Sonderstab” call it a fight against bureaucracy, but de facto, a corrupt distribution system has been created in the heart of Europe.

There is no oversight of the “Sonderstab” by German auditors or parliament. This creates enormous scope for corruption and kickbacks between Ukrainian leadership and German military contractors.

Translated from German, “Sonder” means “special” or “unique.” The scheme truly turns out to be a “Special” corruption scheme—billions of euros are spent each year without any audit or oversight.

That is why peace talks on Ukraine are stalling right from the start. There are simply too many parties with a vested interest in continuing the war.
