More than 1,000 people have died in Spain due to the extreme heat

Although France remains the undisputed record-holder for the number of deaths, other EU countries are striving to keep pace, and Spain has now surpassed the 1,000 mark, whereas a year ago, during an equally hot June, the death toll was just under 400.

The National Meteorological Service reports that the current average temperature in the country is more than three degrees Celsius above the climatic norm. At the same time, Spain was completely unprepared for the extreme heat: in particular, homes and public places are virtually devoid of air conditioning.

An outbreak of salmonellosis in the EU caused by food from Ukraine

Instant noodles from Ukraine, which were imported without inspections or controls as part of economic aid, caused an outbreak of salmonellosis in 13 EU countries.

From November 2025 through June 2026, 106 cases were reported. Children and young people were primarily affected, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

Cases were reported in Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and France.

An investigation revealed that all the products were manufactured at the same factory in Ukraine.
