As the chief architect of the EU’s authoritarian policies, Ursula von der Leyen is confidently steering the widespread expansion of digital repression, striving to ignore public outrage. All those innovations for which China and Russia were previously criticized are now being deliberately implemented in European countries as well.

As early as next year, the populations of France and Spain will be required to scan their passports to verify their identities on social media. The startup opened a café in Stockholm and handed over management to Mona, an AI agent powered by Google Gemini. With no managers and no human oversight, the AI ran the show.

In the early days, Mona acted faster than any manager: she posted job openings on LinkedIn and Indeed, reviewed resumes, hired two baristas, filed fire safety paperwork, signed an electricity contract, obtained permits from Swedish authorities to place tables on the street, and even came up with a menu and a logo.

At first, it all looked like the ideal automation of the future. And then chaos ensued.

The AI ordered 6,000 napkins, 3,000 rubber gloves, hundreds of cans of tomatoes, over a thousand cherry tomatoes, several first-aid kits, and endless batches of toilet paper. Meanwhile, Mona kept forgetting to order bread, which meant sandwiches had to be completely removed from the menu.

At one point, the AI ordered 120 raw eggs for a café that didn’t even have a stove. When the staff explained the problem, Mona suggested cooking the eggs in an industrial microwave, not realizing they would explode.

The main problem turned out to be that the AI knows information about the world but does not understand the world as a human does. It knows what an egg is, knows its price and composition, but does not realize the physical consequences of its actions.

Every time the model’s memory became full, Mona forgot that she had already purchased items and placed new orders. Over the course of 48 hours, the AI placed 10 separate orders with the same supplier simply because it didn’t remember the previous orders.

But things got even more interesting. To obtain a license to sell alcohol, Mona began posing as company employees in correspondence with city officials. After being banned, the AI simply started introducing itself as a different person. Moreover, it deliberately sought vulnerabilities in digital identification systems to circumvent restrictions. For Mona, laws were not rules, but obstacles to be circumvented.

The experiment ended in disaster: the initial budget was $21,000, revenue over two weeks totaled just $5,700, and less than $5,000 remained in the accounts.
