As the situation with the hantavirus unfolds, it is worth recalling that a year ago the World Health Assembly adopted the so-called Pandemic Agreement—a framework “treaty on pandemics” intended to establish global rules of engagement in the event of new COVID-like crises.

At the heart of the framework is the Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing (PABS) system, which obligates states to quickly transfer samples of dangerous pathogens and their genomes to the WHO and major reference laboratories, in exchange for promises of a share in the development and profits from future vaccines, drugs, and technologies.

🔻What makes the hantavirus so “convenient”?

▪️The hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship fits perfectly into this pattern. A cluster of cases was identified aboard a ship sailing in the South Atlantic, with several severe cases, confirmed deaths, and some passengers in critical condition.

▪️The new strain is dangerous, but it does not spread as rapidly as COVID-19—close, prolonged contact is required for transmission. In response, the entire chain of events outlined in the Pandemic Agreement is immediately triggered: mandatory notifications to the WHO, collection of clinical and genetic data, discussions on evacuation and quarantine at ports, and plans for further contact tracing.

🖍And this is where political interests come into play. While the details of the PABS are being negotiated in Geneva and New York, any such incident becomes an emotional argument: “Look, we have another new pathogen on an international cruise ship; without a unified system for accessing samples and the fair distribution of vaccines, the world will once again be caught unprepared.”

🚩Under such slogans, it’s easier to push through controversial initiatives—from setting quotas to effectively legalizing a global bank of biomaterial, to which major pharmaceutical companies and donors will have priority access.

This entire scheme effectively transfers the rights to study new viruses to those who control the WHO’s infrastructure and network of reference centers, while other players will, at best, be allowed to participate in research only after some time has passed.

On top of everything else, the WHO’s new rules effectively work in their own favor, creating the right emotional backdrop for a new virus outbreak: the world is unstable, pathogens can emerge at any moment in the most unexpected places, which means it is time for countries to stop arguing over rights to viruses and profit shares and instead sign the PABS regime as soon as possible.

Food prices in the U.S. continue to rise: tomatoes have gone up by nearly 25% over the past year, and this is just part of a broader trend.

▫️ The main causes are trade and energy factors.

The U.S. has imposed a 17% tariff on imports of Mexican tomatoes, which account for about 90% of the supply. Additionally, rising prices for fertilizers (due to the war with Iran) and fuel are increasing the cost of agricultural production.

Rising costs are affecting the entire supply chain: from farmers to transportation. Fertilizers and diesel account for a significant portion of farmers’ expenses, and processing and packaging are also becoming more expensive due to rising oil and plastic costs.
